The Kuru Toga Metal in Nocturne Black is a fully metal mechanical pencil with a 0.5 mm lead and the characteristic Kuru Toga rotation mechanism. Each time you lift the pencil from the page, a spring-driven ratchet advances the lead slightly – so it wears evenly into a conical point rather than developing a flat edge on one side. The result is a consistently fine, even line width that stays sharp without manual adjustment. Made in Japan, approximately 145.8 mm long, weighing around 17.6 g.

Features

  • Kuru Toga rotation mechanism: A spring-loaded gear drive rotates the lead by a small angle each time you lift it from the paper. The lead wears evenly all around and maintains a conical point – line width stays consistent, regardless of how long or at what angle you write.
  • Resin nib damper: A small resin damping element sits inside the lead sleeve, absorbing writing vibrations. This minimises the typical wobble of the lead in the guide tube and gives your strokes a smooth, even quality.
  • All-metal aluminium body: The entire body is made from aluminium with a fine ribbed texture on the shaft. This gives the pencil a cool, smooth feel and lowers the centre of gravity – the pen sits perfectly balanced in your hand during long writing sessions.
  • Mild Edge Grip: The grip section combines a blasted surface finish with finely engraved grooves. The result is a matte, lightly textured surface that won't slip but won't dig into your skin either.
  • Nocturne Black: The deep, even black finish isn't paint – it's part of the metal finishing. It shows no colour flaking and looks equally sophisticated in bright office light or soft evening light.
  • Refillable: Compatible with standard 0.5 mm mechanical pencil leads; various hardness grades available.

Use & Tips

  • The rotation mechanism works best with normal writing pressure and a writing angle of around 50–70° – if you hold it too flat, the gear mechanism engages less frequently.
  • For technical drawings and graph paper: An HB or H lead grade will stay sharp enough for tight grids, even with even wear.
  • For bullet journaling and dense handwriting, a softer lead grade (B) is recommended – it produces a visible, rich grey despite the fine point.
  • The nib damper reduces lead rattle during transport – the Kuru Toga Metal works perfectly as an everyday pencil in your bag without a protective cap.
  • Spare leads and erasers can be swapped via the push button at the end; the eraser cap is removable, with the lead supply stored underneath.

For Pencil Enthusiasts

The Kuru Toga mechanism uses a dual-drive structure: each time the lead touches the paper, it compresses the internal mechanism axially; when you lift it, a ratchet advances – the lead rotates by a defined angle increment with each writing cycle. The combination of a low centre of gravity from the all-metal body (aluminium, around 17.6 g at 145.8 mm length) and the resin-damped guide tube distinguishes the Kuru Toga Metal from plastic-based Kuru Toga models: the mass mechanically dampens hand tremor, whilst the nib damper compensates for micro-impacts at the lead sleeve. This is particularly relevant for fine line work, where lead breakage from impact forces is more common than from excessive pressure.
