The Ystudio "Weight of Words" Portable Brassing in Black is a fountain pen crafted from solid, black lacquered brass – compact at 13.8 cm, yet noticeably weighty at 72 grams in hand. The black surface is not a finished state, but rather a starting material: it wears away with daily use, revealing the warm, golden brass beneath and transforming each pen into a unique object over time. The collection includes a turned protective sleeve made from black lacquered white maple, along with two leather loops for attaching the fountain pen to a rucksack, bag or strap.

Features

  • Solid brass, black lacquered: The body is made from solid brass with a matte black lacquer coating. Through daily use, the coating wears away at edges and the grip zone, revealing the golden brass – a controlled ageing process that can be actively accelerated: the pen comes with sandpaper, allowing you to selectively expose individual areas.
  • Steel nib by Schmidt, Germany (F): The gold-plated stainless steel nib in F (Fine) size from German Schmidt manufacturing writes smoothly and reliably. A fine nib is particularly suited to smaller handwriting, closely-ruled notebooks and ink-resistant paper with a smooth surface – the ink line remains precise and sharp.
  • Protective sleeve in white maple: The turned sleeve made from black lacquered sycamore maple holds the fountain pen securely and snugly. The cylindrical form with screw cap reliably protects the nib whilst travelling and also serves as a stand when writing.
  • Two leather loops: The included loops allow you to attach the pen directly to your rucksack, bag or shoulder strap – within reach, without a case.
  • European standard cartridges and converter: The fountain pen is compatible with European standard cartridges as well as the included converter, enabling use of the full range of fountain pen inks.

Use & Tips

  • Choosing ink: The Schmidt nib works best with inks of medium viscosity. Very wet, highly pigmented inks such as concentrated iron gall inks may feather slightly on some papers – on smooth, calendered paper, however, the F nib writes precisely and with excellent control.
  • Developing patina: If you wish to deliberately remove the black lacquer, start with the included sandpaper on areas that naturally experience contact: the grip zone, cap and edges. The result is an individual two-tone pattern of matte black and warm brass.
  • Carrying when travelling: Thread the leather loop through the eye on the cap and attach it to a bag strap or D-ring. The fountain pen then hangs externally on your luggage and is ready to use in seconds – no need to search inside pockets.
  • Protective sleeve as grip extension: Since the cap cannot be posted onto the barrel, the weight of the brass compensates for the short barrel when writing. If you prefer a longer grip, you can lay the sleeve on the table as a loose counterweight.
  • Ink compatibility: Fountain pen inks are not archival unless explicitly archival ink is used. For notes worthy of archiving, an archival fountain pen ink based on iron gall is recommended.

For Brass Enthusiasts

Brass oxidises through contact with skin, humidity and environmental influences in its own unique way – the resulting patina differs from user to user. The black lacquer coating of the Brassing model is not a protection against this process, but rather a second layer over living material: underneath, the brass gradually develops a golden-yellow patina, and in exposed areas sometimes a slightly warm brownish tone. If you wish to reverse the process, you can use brass polish to refresh individual areas without changing the overall appearance. The Schmidt nib FH-241 (F) is a separate unit that can be unscrewed and replaced if needed – a craftsmanship advantage over permanently installed nib units.
