TWSBI Piston Fountain Pen ECO Rootbeer with bronze (EF)
The TWSBI ECO Rootbeer with Bronze is a demonstrator piston filler with a warm brown cap and piston knob made from semi-transparent rootbeer resin – a smoky amber tone reminiscent of the beverage that gave it its name. The crystal-clear acrylic barrel shows the ink supply and piston mechanism at all times. Bronze-colored fittings – clip, rings, nib – set a warm, patinated accent that creates a harmonious color dialogue with the brown of the resin. Available in nib sizes EF, F, M, B, and Stub 1.1.
Highlights
- Integrated piston mechanism – no converter, no cartridge: Ink is drawn directly from the bottle. The piston knob at the end of the barrel turns smoothly and precisely; a simple turn draws approximately 1.7 ml of ink inside. This is many times what a conventional converter holds, making the ECO a long-distance runner for everyday use.
- Demonstrator barrel made of clear acrylic – the ink level is visible at all times; filled with copper-brown or orange-colored ink, the barrel itself becomes a color object against the bronze fittings.
- Semi-transparent rootbeer cap and piston knob – the smoky brown of the resin allows the internal structure to shimmer through and gives the cap its own depth, which changes slightly depending on the light.
- Bronze-coated steel nib – the nib is engraved with the TWSBI logo and comes in Western size specification. Because TWSBI uses a slightly wider grinding finish for bronze-colored nibs, these nibs write slightly fuller than their silver-colored counterparts – relevant for those who calibrate precise line widths.
- Hexagonal screw cap – the faceted shape prevents the pen from rolling away on an angled desk surface. A rubber sealing ring on the cap ensures an airtight seal; even after weeks without use, the nib starts writing immediately on the first stroke.
- Cap can be posted – posting the cap on the end of the barrel extends the pen to 168 mm and brings it into a balanced proportion that makes longer writing sessions more comfortable.
- Completely disassemblable – TWSBI supplies each ECO with a small wrench and a jar of silicone oil. This allows you to service, re-lubricate, and clean the piston mechanism at home – no shipping, no workshop needed.
Application & Tips
- Ink selection for the rootbeer look – brown, tobacco-colored, or copper-orange inks enhance the warm character of the color scheme; through the clear barrel, the ink inside acts as a second design element.
- Nib size EF – for closely-spaced planner layouts, small handwriting, and paper with 70–80 g/m²; produces very fine, controlled lines. On smooth, calendered paper, the EF nib glides smoothly and evenly.
- Nib size F – the universally applicable size for everyday notes, journaling, and flowing writing. Western F corresponds to roughly a medium-fine line depending on paper.
- Nib sizes M and B – M for legible, bold script in bullet journals or notebooks; B for headlines, signatures, or generous handwriting on satin paper – inks with shading come particularly into their own here.
- Broad nib Stub 1.1 – the wedge-shaped cross-section creates natural line-width contrasts in italic script: broad horizontal strokes, thin upstrokes. Ideal for Latin chancery script, modern calligraphy, and anyone who wants to showcase shimmer inks impressively. The broad ink trace emphasizes color shimmer and nuances particularly strongly.
- Cleaning – flush the piston multiple times with lukewarm water through the nib. Every 1–2 months or when changing ink, a complete emptying is recommended. For stubborn deposits, the pen can be disassembled with the included tool and the piston mechanism re-lubricated with silicone oil.
- Shimmer inks – the generous ink channel of the ECO reliably transports glitter particles without clogging quickly. Regular flushing is still important.
For Piston Filler Enthusiasts
TWSBI manufactures its ECO nibs from steel with a base geometry made in Germany and uses Western size standards. Bronze-coated nibs like this undergo a slightly different finishing process that opens the nib slit marginally wider – a note for those who compare line widths directly: An ECO EF in bronze writes similarly to an F of a silver-colored ECO nib. The ECO barrel is completely disassemblable, allowing cleaning of the piston housing from the inside – a characteristic rare in pens of this price range. The included wrench fits perfectly on the piston nut; the included silicone oil is sufficient for many maintenance cycles. TWSBI is manufactured by Taiwan-based Ta Shin Precision Co., which has been producing writing instruments for Western brands for over 50 years before launching under its own name in 2009.
