The MD Fountain Pen by Midori is the in-house fountain pen for the MD paper line – cream-colored plastic body, metal cap, steel nib in Medium. What makes this nib special is its downward-curved tip, which Midori internally refers to as a bird beak shape: a geometry that absorbs writing pressure evenly and remains stable on paper at varying writing angles. At around 15 g, the fountain pen is featherlight in the hand – closer to the weight of a pencil than a classic metal fountain pen.

Special Features

  • Bird beak steel nib (M): The downward-curved tip distributes writing pressure over a larger contact surface and writes evenly at both shallow and steep angles. Those without practiced fountain pen grip technique or who adopt varying positions while writing benefit from this tolerance. The Japanese M corresponds in line width to approximately a European FM – wet and even, with noticeable ink flow.
  • Transparent grip section with ribbed texture: The lightly ribbed surface sits securely in the hand. At the same time, the transparent material reveals the ink feed and cartridge fill level – with bright ink colors, this becomes a visual appeal in itself.
  • Metal cap with snap-lock mechanism: The cap snaps firmly and securely in place, keeps the nib moist, and protects it from damage. Posting the cap on the barrel end works stably.
  • Clip: Integrated metal clip for secure attachment to notebook cover, shirt, or jacket.
  • International standard short cartridges: The widely used format ensures broad refill compatibility. A black ink cartridge is included. With an international converter (not included), bottled ink can also be used.
  • Tailored for MD paper: The cream-colored MD paper has a finely smooth, lightly absorbent surface – the M nib responds with a soft, even line and pleasantly quick drying times.

Application & Tips

  • Daily writing & journaling: The light weight and uncomplicated nib geometry make the MD fountain pen a low-fatigue companion for longer writing sessions in notebooks, planners, or journals.
  • Inks with shading effect: The M nib lays a wet, saturated line. Inks with pronounced shading potential show clear color gradations on smooth, lightly absorbent paper – particularly readable on MD paper.
  • Ink changes: Those who want to try different colors use international standard short cartridges. For bottled ink, a matching international converter is recommended.
  • Sketches and line drawings: The rounded tip glides smoothly even on upstrokes without catching; on finely matte MD paper, this creates an even, controlled line image.
  • On the go: 133 mm closed, clip included – good pocket compatibility. The tightly closing metal cap prevents the nib from drying out even after a multi-day pause.
  • Note when disassembling: Between barrel and body sits a small metal ring. When unscrewing, be careful not to lose it – without it, the cap will not snap correctly into place.

For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts

The downward-curved nib geometry is designed so that it holds the fingers farther from the paper than a flat-lying nib – this reduces ink smudging when writing left-handed or with very wet inks. The nib has no breather hole, giving it a compact, precise appearance. The barrel has ventilation holes, which is why an eyedropper conversion is not possible. To clean the nib: it can be easily pulled from the grip section and rinsed under lukewarm water.
