Kaweco Piston Fountain Pen SPORT AL Navy/Gold (B)
The Kaweco SPORT AL piston filler in Navy/Gold combines the iconic pocket pen format of the AL Sport series with an integrated piston filling system crafted from anodised aluminium. The dark blue anodised body has a cool, slightly matte feel in hand – solid, smooth, with noticeable weight. Gold accent details on the clip, cap and nib unit provide a warm contrast. The B-size nib is gold-plated and belongs to the threaded 190 unit.
Features
- Integrated piston filling system: Ink is drawn directly from a bottle into the permanently installed ink chamber – no converter, no cartridge. This enables the use of the entire range of bottled inks, including inks available exclusively in bottles.
- Transparent ink window: Just behind the grip section sits a clear acrylic element through which the ink level is readable at a glance – no opening, no guessing.
- Anodised aluminium body in Navy: The anodised finish is scratch-resistant and durable for everyday use. The dark blue metallic finish has a slightly silky texture – neither high-gloss nor rough, but grippy and cool.
- Gold-plated steel nib, replaceable: The 190 nib unit is screwed in and can be changed without tools. The B nib size produces a visibly broad, ink-rich line – ideal for flowing handwriting, journalling and fluid script.
- Integrated nib clip: The curved clip is firmly screwed to the body and can be removed by unscrewing the end cap. Sits securely on a shirt pocket edge or notebook cover.
- Compact pocket format with full length posted: Closed, the pen measures 10.5 cm – fits in any jacket pocket. With the cap posted, it extends to 13 cm, providing a full writing length in hand.
- Blind cap for piston protection: The removable end cap protects the piston button from accidental turning when the writing cap is posted.
- Weight 22 g: Noticeably heavier than the plastic Classic Sport – the aluminium gives the compact format a balanced feel between nib and grip section.
Use & Tips
- B nib size for broad strokes: Stub nibs respond to paper quality – on smooth, ink-fast paper, a B nib delivers full ink flow without feathering. On rougher paper, stroke width appears less controlled.
- Filling from an ink bottle: To fill the piston pen: turn the piston button at the end fully forward (piston extended), dip the nib deep into the ink bottle, then slowly turn the button back. For maximum capacity, repeat the process twice – the second fill purges air from the ink chamber.
- Changing inks: Turn the piston button fully forward, rinse out remaining ink, rinse the nib with clear water – then fill with the new colour. The transparent ink window shows when the chamber is clean.
- On the go: The twist cap seals the pen tightly. For travel, it's best to either completely fill the ink chamber (minimal air bubble = less leaking under pressure changes) or empty it entirely.
- Nib care: The 190 unit can be purchased separately and changed independently – handy if you want to try a different nib size or replace a damaged nib.
- Ink selection: With the piston filling system, all bottled inks are available to you – including ink variants with particles, sheen effects or high pigmentation that aren't available in cartridge form.
For Fountain Pen Enthusiasts
The AL Sport piston filler uses its own 190 nib unit with threaded collar – this is not compatible with the standard Kaweco Sport nib unit (unthreaded). The piston mechanism is fully integrated into the body; the ink chamber is not removable. The end cap at the grip secures the piston button against turning when the writing cap is posted – a design detail that matters when writing with the cap posted. All Kaweco nibs are manufactured in Germany and hand-assembled and individually tested in Nuremberg.
