The Robinson Pouch M in Indigo with the geometric 4×10 pattern is a pencil case made from Kurume-Kasuri cotton fabric – crafted in Japan in collaboration with the traditional weaving mill Okamoto Shoten. The fabric is created using a technique over 200 years old from Fukuoka Prefecture: the threads are individually indigo-dyed before weaving, creating the characteristic, slightly blurred pattern on soft, dense cotton fabric. The result is a pencil case that feels firm and pleasantly rough – substantial enough to convey quality, light enough for your bag.

Highlights

  • Kurume-Kasuri weaving technique: The threads are indigo-dyed according to a predetermined pattern before weaving. The finished fabric shows gently frayed contours – not a print, but a genuine result of the weaving process. No two pieces look exactly alike.
  • 100% cotton, indigo-dyed: The dense cotton fabric feels firm in the hand, springs back slightly, and protects the contents from minor impacts. The indigo color becomes softer over time and with frequent use, developing an individual patina.
  • 4×10 pattern: A geometric dot grid from the Kasuri repertoire – intricate and precise, yet with a lively, handmade appearance thanks to the weaving technique. Deep indigo meets white.
  • Zipper: Ensures secure closure of contents; the zip opens the full width of the pencil case, making it easy to remove longer pens or brushes.
  • Size M: At approximately 21.4 × 14.6 cm, the pencil case holds eight to ten pens side by side or a mixed selection of fountain pen, pencil, eraser, and accessories.
  • Made in Japan in collaboration with Okamoto Shoten, Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture.

Use & Tips

  • For fountain pens with standard grip diameter, the pouch lies flat on the desk – unfolded it provides a clear overview, folded it's a compact companion in your bag.
  • For those working with multiple pen hardnesses or ink colors, the interior offers plenty of space for a carefully curated selection without pens rubbing against each other.
  • The fabric resists scratches from metal clips or caps – robust everyday use without special care needed.
  • Indigo-dyed cotton fabric may slightly bleed during the first wash. Wash separately from light textiles; hand washing in cold water is recommended.
  • As a travel pencil case: The firm texture prevents the pouch from collapsing in luggage and pens from shifting.

For Kasuri Enthusiasts

Kurume Kasuri is one of Japan's three major Kasuri textiles and was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of the nation in 1956. What makes this technique special: unlike printed fabrics, in authentic Kasuri the warp and weft threads are deliberately bundled and dyed before weaving – only the unprotected areas absorb the indigo color. When woven together, the predefined sections come together to form the pattern, which gains its characteristically lively, never quite sharply defined contour through minimal shifts during weaving. The 4×10 motif belongs to the group of geometric dot patterns (Arare variations) and is one of the classic repertoire patterns of Kurume-Kasuri craftsmanship. Okamoto Shoten continues this tradition today in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture.
