The Robinson Pencil Case M "Indigo Clouds" is crafted from Kurume-Kasuri cotton fabric – a traditional Japanese woven textile whose characteristic pattern is created by pre-dyeing individual threads before weaving. The cloud motif in deep indigo blue and white appears soft and slightly blurred, almost as if suggested with a brush – an optical result of Kasuri weaving technique, not a printed design. The fabric feels warm and slightly textured, with the typical, tactile quality of hand-dyed cotton. The case is made in collaboration with traditional Japanese manufacturer Okamoto Shoten.

Features

  • Kurume-Kasuri weaving technique: Threads are bundled and dyed with indigo before weaving. As they are woven together, the characteristic softly blurred pattern edges emerge – each piece is a unique example through minimal variations in the dyeing process.
  • Indigo dyeing: The deep blue of the indigo colour deepens with every wash – the fabric becomes more nuanced over time and gains in character.
  • Cloud motif: The traditional Kasuri pattern in white on indigo lends the case a calm, atmospheric quality – neither graphically harsh nor folkloric, but timeless and understated.
  • Zip closure: Secure fastening with full opening – pens, nib cases and small tools can be easily removed without disturbing the contents.
  • Compact M format: At approximately 21.9 × 15.3 cm, the case offers space for a handy selection of writing instruments or everyday essentials without becoming bulky.
  • Cotton fabric: Soft, breathable natural material – protects delicate lacquered and polished surfaces of fountain pens and writing instruments inside from scratches.

Use & Tips

  • Well suited for five to eight pens of medium thickness – ideal as a compact travel set with selected fountain pens, gel pens or fine-liners.
  • The soft cotton lining protects lacquered and polished surfaces of sensitive writing instruments from scratches during transport.
  • Also usable as an organiser for spare refills, small erasers, sharpeners or rolls of washi tape.
  • The indigo fabric is lightfast but should be washed cold and separately – indigo can fade slightly on first contact with wet fabric.
  • Those who use the case daily will notice how the fabric becomes softer over time and the indigo blue appears richer – a well-known and valued effect of naturally dyed Kasuri fabrics.

For Textile Enthusiasts

Kurume Kasuri has been designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Japan since 1957 and has been produced for over 200 years in the region around the city of Kurume in Fukuoka Prefecture. The manufacturing process comprises around 30 individual steps and takes several months. Characteristic is the so-called Kasuri technique: warp and weft threads are bundled in places and dyed with indigo before weaving, so that when the threads intersect, a delicately blurred pattern emerges – the so-called "Kasuri blur". In the cloud pattern (雲絣, Kumogasuri), both thread directions are partially dyed, which creates the delicate intermingling of white and indigo. Okamoto Shoten is one of the few remaining specialists who continue to develop this technique for everyday objects such as pouches and bags.
