Sonnenleder Wallet "Nahe" natural
The Sonnenleder wallet "Nahe" is a handcrafted purse made from selected South German cowhide in natural colour – a light, warm brown with a lively, untreated surface. The leather is tanned in Germany using traditional pit tanning with purely vegetable tannins: a process that gives the material its authentic character, its distinctive aroma and a soft, firm feel. At 105 × 75 mm, the "Nahe" is slim enough for a trouser pocket, yet offers six thoughtfully arranged compartments for everyday use.
Features
- Purely vegetable tanned, traditional pit tanning: The cowhide matures in a pit filled with tanning liquor – a process that takes months and gives the leather a particularly high tannin content, firmness and breathability. No chrome, no synthetic tannins.
- Lively natural surface: The untreated surface shows the leather's natural colour and structure variations. Each wallet is thus unique – variations in tone and grain are intentional and not a flaw.
- Patina as a quality mark: Rain, sun and body warmth change the leather over time: it darkens, develops an individual patina and becomes softer and more supple with use. The purse grows with its owner.
- Six compartments, compact format: 1 banknote compartment for folded notes, 1 coin pocket with polished metal zip, 1 slip pocket plus 3 credit card slots – all in a case measuring 105 × 75 mm.
- Polished metal zips and rubber webbing from Germany: The zip on the coin pocket is polished metal, and the rubber webbing keeps notes and cards securely in place even without press studs.
- Entirely handmade, manufactured in Germany: Each Nahe is crafted by hand. The meticulous workmanship – straight seams, precise cutting, even edges – is directly noticeable.
Use & Tips
- Break it in: New Sonnenleder leather is initially somewhat stiff. After just a few weeks of daily use, the wallet adapts through hand warmth and trouser pocket temperature – it becomes softer and feels even more comfortable in the hand.
- Encourage patina deliberately: If you want the leather to darken evenly, gently rub it with a dry cloth and occasionally treat it with a purely plant-based leather care product. Left untreated, it develops a more irregular, very lively patina.
- Use compartments optimally: The three credit card slots each hold one to two cards – ideal for EC card, credit card and rail pass. The slip pocket is perfect for receipts, business cards or a folded till receipt.
- Protect cards and notes: The leather contains no metallic coatings or RFID shielding – if you need RFID protection, place cards in appropriate protective sleeves.
- Care: Simply blot away external moisture with a soft cloth and let dry – never use heat. Occasional treatment with natural-based leather grease keeps the material supple and protects the surface.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit tanning, as used by Sonnenleder, is considered the oldest and most time-consuming form of vegetable tanning: hides go through a multi-stage process in pits filled with tanning liquor before the leather achieves its characteristic high tannin content – this is what gives the finished material its firmness, durability and ability to patina. The South German cowhide that Sonnenleder works with retains its natural surface: no pigment coating, no embossing that obscures the structure. What you see and feel is the genuine grain of the animal – with all the marks that life has left behind. That's precisely what makes each piece unique and is at the same time the unmistakable hallmark of consistently natural leather.
