Sonnenleder Wallet with ID Case "Rhein" natural

The "Rhein" wallet from Sonnenleder is a combination wallet made from purely vegetable-tanned South German cowhide – undyed in natural colour, with the characteristic warm red-gold tone of this tanning method. The leather has an open-pore, lively surface: visible and tactile in structure, feel and authentic leather scent. The removable ID case doubles the capacity without overloading the wallet.

• Traditional pit tanning, purely vegetable: The cowhide is tanned according to time-honoured methods in tanning pits with plant-based tanning agents – a labour-intensive process that gives the leather firmness, body and an unforced surface. No synthetic tanning chemicals, no sealed grain.

• Water marks on natural-toned leather: Plant-tanned, undyed leather reacts visibly to moisture and develops marks that blend into the overall patina over time. If you prefer a uniform surface, lightly impregnate the wallet before first use with suitable leather fat.
• Size for shirt and jacket pockets: 100 × 135 mm fits in a breast pocket or inside pocket without bulging – provided the coin compartment and card slots are filled moderately.

Pit tanning – Sonnenleder's core process – is the most time-consuming form of vegetable tanning: the leather hangs in pits filled with tanning liquor, and tanning agents from barks, fruits and roots bind slowly into the protein fibres of the hide. The result is leather with a high tannin content that is firmer, denser and more water-resistant than quickly tanned alternatives. In the natural finish – completely undyed – the so-called red tanning is directly evident: the characteristic reddish-brown base tone is created solely by the tanning agents themselves, without additional dyeing. The open-pore, unsealed grain breathes, responds to its environment and develops a closed, protective patina over months and years. Each wallet carries the individual characteristics of the cowhide used – colour depth, grain pattern and variations differ from piece to piece.
