Sonnenleder Pencil Case "Boldt" natural
The Sonnenleder "Boldt" pencil case in natural is a streamlined leather pouch for everyday use – flat enough for your bag, spacious enough for essential writing instruments. The exterior is made from southern German cowhide, vegetable-tanned purely in Germany and hand-finished. Inside, soft suede lining ensures that delicate surfaces – lacquered fountain pens, pencil tips, polished ballpoints – remain unscratched.
Features
- Vegetable pit tanning, made in Germany: The leather is treated exclusively with natural tannins from bark, roots and fruits – chromium-free and skin-friendly. The open-pore structure is preserved, enabling the characteristic patina development.
- Natural colour "natural" – a living material: The undyed leather starts in a light, creamy-beige tone and gradually darkens through sunlight, hand oils and use. Over time, a honey-coloured, glossy patina develops – each piece develops its own distinctive appearance.
- Suede lining inside: The velvety, slightly grippy interior protects polished and lacquered writing instruments from scratches. Fountain pens with delicate finishes rest safely inside.
- Metal zip fastener: The polished metal closure runs smoothly and keeps the main compartment securely closed – even when the case stands upright in a bag or is transported.
- Sleek flat format: At 19.0 × 6.0 × 1.0 cm, the Boldt fits into any jacket pocket, rucksack and most notebook sleeves – without bulging or getting in the way.
- Handcrafted: Cutting, stitching and finishing are all done by hand, evident in the slightly organic edges and precise, artisanal stitch pattern.
Use & Tips
- As a daily companion for 3–5 writing instruments: The main compartment comfortably holds a standard fountain pen, a pencil and one or two additional pens. Standard lengths up to approximately 14–15 cm fit without problem.
- Caring for the natural colour: For even patina development, carry the case daily and allow occasional contact with daylight. Water or ink marks on the exterior can be dabbed away immediately with a dry cloth – the leather doesn't yet grip fresh liquid strongly.
- For fountain pen enthusiasts: The suede lining is particularly important for fountain pens with celluloid, urushi or lacquer finishes – these surfaces are sensitive to hard or rough interior linings. The Boldt offers exactly the right gentleness.
- As a gift: The natural leather of the Boldt visibly changes with its owner – it's one of the few everyday objects that actually becomes more personal the longer you use it. An engraveable exterior surface allows additional personalisation.
- Breaking in: New Sonnenleder natural leather is still slightly stiff. After a few days of use it becomes more supple, the zip runs even more smoothly – this is not a defect, but part of the settling-in process.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Sonnenleder uses exclusively southern German cattle hides, which are treated for several weeks in vegetable tanning liquors made from bark, roots and fruits according to traditional pit-tanning methods. This process creates an open-pore, chromium-free leather containing no artificial pigments – that's why the natural colour starts as pale cream-white and gradually develops a honey to amber-coloured surface through UV light and hand perspiration. The suede lining inside is also a natural product: its slightly abrasive texture keeps pens in place without damaging writing instrument surfaces. Those keen to accelerate patina development can occasionally treat the leather with a tiny amount of uncoloured leather fat – this nourishes the fibres and deepens the colour tone more evenly.
