Sonnenleder Pencil Case "Boldt" black
The Boldt is a sleek pencil case crafted from Southern German cowhide – vegetable-tanned entirely in Germany and hand-finished. The black version strikes a compact, no-nonsense appearance: 19 cm long, 6 cm wide, just one centimetre flat when closed. Inside, soft suede lining nestles against your pens; outside, a polished metal zip secures the main compartment firmly.
Features
- Vegetable tanning, traditional craftsmanship: The cowhide is tanned with natural tannins from bark, roots and fruit – a process that preserves the open-pore fibre structure. This allows the leather to breathe, absorb oils and develop a unique patina over time: a naturally grown protective layer that makes the surface denser and more even.
- Suede lining: The inside is lined with velvety-soft suede. This protects delicate writing instruments from scratches – fountain pens with lacquered bodies, polished mechanical pencils, gilded nibs all sit safely within.
- Metal zip: The polished metal closure runs smoothly and seals the compartment completely. No protruding pens, no accidental opening in your bag.
- Format: At 19 × 6 × 1 cm, the Boldt slips flat into any jacket or handbag pocket. Room for five to seven standard-length pens – enough for a carefully curated writing set.
- Made in Germany: Every step, from tanning through finishing, takes place in Germany, using hides from the region and short supply chains.
Use & Tips
- Writing instruments: Fountain pens, liquid ink rollers, fineliners and pencils up to approximately 15 cm long fit comfortably. The suede lining makes it especially suitable for instruments with delicate lacquer or gilded nibs.
- Breaking in: Fresh from delivery, the leather is still firm and smooth. With regular use it becomes more supple – the patina begins where fingers, light and air touch the leather most frequently.
- Care: An occasional application of colourless leather conditioner keeps the leather supple and slows drying. Avoid excessive moisture; should the case get wet, dry it flat – never with heat.
- Developing patina actively: Black leather develops its patina more subtly than undyed hide – the surface gains depth and shine without darkening dramatically. Regular handling with bare hands accelerates the process at grip points.
- As a gift: The Boldt suits anyone who works with pens daily – and those who appreciate the quality of a tool, even resting on a shelf.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Vegetable-tanned leather now accounts for less than ten per cent of global leather production – Sonnenleder works with a tannery that employs this traditional pit-tanning method. In pit tanning, hides rest in tannin vats for months until the tannins penetrate evenly through the entire leather thickness. The result is denser, firmer leather with better memory than quick-tanning produces. Surface scratches in vegetable-tanned leather often polish out cleanly – the leather "absorbs" them into the patina, whereas damage to chemically tanned leather remains permanent. The black Boldt was dyed after tanning; the pigmentation lies within the leather itself, not as a surface coating.
