Sonnenleder Pencil Case "Berit groß" black
The Sonnenleder "Berit Large" pencil case is a spacious stationery pouch made from vegetable-tanned cowhide – handcrafted in Germany. The leather is processed using traditional pit tanning without chromium additives, giving it an open-pore, lively surface and a soft, warm feel. At 22 × 10 × 3.5 cm, it offers plenty of room for a generous collection of pens, brushes or drawing tools, and closes securely with a zip.
Features
- Vegetable-tanned cowhide from Southern German hides – the chrome-free tanning process using traditional methods produces a leather that breathes, smells and evolves with use rather than deteriorating.
- Natural, unsealed surface – scars, texture and individual colour variations remain visible. Every case is a unique piece thanks to these characteristics.
- Patina through use: Light, hand warmth and everyday contact deepen the colour over time and form a natural protective layer – the deep black gains character and richness.
- Zip closure: The single main compartment opens and closes completely, ensuring no pen falls out – even in a bag or rucksack.
- Handmade in Germany: Cutting, stitching and assembly are carried out at the Sonnenleder workshop, established in 1986.
Use & Tips
- For ballpoints, fountain pens, fineliners, mechanical pencils and markers: At 10 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep, the case holds a good number of writing instruments in various sizes, including wider bodies like TWSBI piston fillers.
- As an etui for brush pens and watercolour brushes: The flat, stable shape reliably protects tips from external pressure.
- For calligraphers: Stub nibs, reservoirs and small accessories can be kept together – the soft leather interior won't scratch delicate nib surfaces.
- Care: Vegetable-tanned leather responds well to occasional rubbing with a colourless leather conditioner or pure beeswax. Water contact initially leaves dark spots, which blend in as patina develops.
- The case also works as a compact travel etui for charging cables, earbuds or small accessories – the dimensions fit into any laptop bag.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Sonnenleder uses exclusively carefully selected Southern German cowhides, processed using traditional pit tanning – one of the most time-consuming vegetable tanning methods. The process takes several months and produces a leather with a tannin content that gives the material its characteristic strength and supple structure. The surface remains unsealed: no lacquer, no embossing covers the natural grain. In black, the leather initially displays a matt, cool deep black; as patina develops, it gains shine at edges and grip zones – a progression that is particularly pronounced in vegetable-tanned, unlined leatherware.
