The Berit small pencil case from Sonnenleder is a simple, sturdy case made from vegetable-tanned cowhide – crafted and hand-finished in Germany. The leather is chrome-free and uses no synthetic tanning agents: its open-pored, natural surface has a warm, subtly matt character from the start and develops a distinctive patina over time. In black, the case conveys a sense of calm and focus – a colour that lets the leather's true character speak for itself.

Features

  • Vegetable pit tanning, chrome-free: The leather is tanned using traditional methods with natural tannins – without synthetic tanning chemicals. The result is a firm, substantial leather with natural tactility: lightly textured, pleasant to grip, with a subtle natural scent.
  • Hand-finished in Germany: Each piece is cut and finished by hand. Natural grain marks, colour variations and surface textures are visible and tactile – no two pieces are identical.
  • Patina instead of sealing: The surface is not waterproofed or lacquered. Use, light and touch slowly change the colour – black deepens over time, and the surface gains in lustre and character.
  • One main compartment, zip closure: The case opens fully, revealing the interior space. The zip runs the entire length – pens, rulers and writing instruments can be easily removed and organised.
  • Compact format: 22 × 7.5 × 3 cm – slim enough for a bag, spacious enough for a solid selection of writing instruments.

Use & Tips

  • Fountain pens, rollerball pens, ballpoints: The case comfortably holds a handful of writing instruments – ideal for a curated selection rather than an overstuffed pencil case. Fountain pens with caps fit easily inside without scratching.
  • Travel and desk use: The format fits flat into a bag or rucksack and sits stably on a desk. The leather walls protect delicate writing instruments from scratches.
  • Actively shaping the patina: If you leave the case untreated, you'll experience how black deepens over time and the surface gains in grippiness. If you want to slow the development, you can occasionally treat it with a colourless leather conditioner – but this is entirely optional.
  • No initial treatment required: The leather arrives ready to use. Fresh Sonnenleder can initially darken unevenly when exposed to moisture – this is not a defect, but the beginning of patina development.

For Leather Enthusiasts

Sonnenleder uses exclusively selected southern German cowhides, tanned purely vegetably according to a time-honoured recipe – a process reserved today for only a tiny fraction of all leather produced. Tanning with natural tannins fills the leather structure more firmly and densely than chrome-tanned leather: the result is a substantial, shape-stable material that doesn't feel limp, but has a clear inherent tension. The natural, open-pored surface takes on marks of use – and returns them as patina. Irregularities in grain and colour are not concealed at Sonnenleder, but understood as a property of the material itself.
