Sonnenleder Bank Bag "Weill" mocha brown
The Weill document wallet from Sonnenleder is a flat leather folder crafted from vegetable-tanned South German cattle hide, handcrafted in Germany. The warm mocha brown is a rich, earthy mid-tone – grippy and supple at once, with the characteristically open-pored surface that distinguishes vegetable-tanned leather from coated smooth leather. At 24.5 × 16.5 cm, the Weill fits A5 documents perfectly – compact enough for a coat's inner pocket, yet spacious enough for folded bank statements, receipts or letters.
Features
- Purely vegetable-tanned cattle hide from South Germany – no synthetic tanning chemicals, open-pored structure that absorbs moisture and skin oils whilst developing a unique patina over time: wear marks become colour depth, not damage.
- Handcrafted in Germany – each piece shows the subtle natural irregularities that machine-laminated surfaces lack: minimal scar variations, characterful leather.
- Smooth polished metal zip – secures the single main compartment safely and swiftly without jamming or tearing.
- Inside naturally finished with suede-like surface – the velvety interior protects sensitive documents, notes or cards from scratches.
- A5-sized format – accommodates folded DIN A4 sheets, bank statements, receipt pads, travel documents or envelopes up to DIN C6.
- Mocha brown: a warm, mid-tone brown with a slightly reddish undertone – the colour deepens over time to a rich dark brown.
Use & Tips
- As a classic document wallet: keep banknotes, receipts and bank statements together – the A5 format keeps everything folded and organised without creasing.
- As a travel document folder: train tickets, booking confirmations, ID and some cash all in one – compact enough for a jacket pocket or small carry-on.
- As a desk companion: keep loose notes, receipts or business cards at hand between appointments.
- Care: vegetable-tanned leather responds to moisture with temporary discolouration that evens out as it dries. Treat occasionally with a colourless leather conditioner or leather wax – this keeps the surface supple and slows uneven darkening.
- Breaking in: newly purchased Sonnenleder leather is still somewhat stiff. After a few weeks of use it becomes softer and adapts to your own hand.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Sonnenleder works according to the principle of purely vegetable tanning – a process that takes considerably longer than industrial chrome tanning, but preserves the leather's open-pored structure and tannin content. These very tannins are responsible for the leather responding to light, warmth and touch: the mocha colour is not a pigment applied to a seal, but lies deep within the material. This also means that two pieces from the same series will look different after years – depending on how and where the wallet was carried. The suede-like inside is the flesh side of the cattle hide, deliberately left unprocessed: rough, velvety, without coating.
