Sonnenleder Wallet "Spree" natural

The Spree wallet by Sonnenleder is a portemonnaie crafted from Southern German cowhide, tanned entirely plant-based in Germany and finished by hand. Tanning is carried out using tannins from barks, roots and fruits – chromium-free, with no plastic coating. The result is leather with open pores and a warm surface that smells authentically of leather from the outset, feels firm and vibrant, and develops a distinctive patina with each year of use.

• Purely plant-based pit tanning: Southern German cattle hides are tanned using traditional methods without chromium salts. The open-pore, uncoated surface remains natural – this is the foundation for patina formation later on.
• Living patina rather than unchanging appearance: With use, the natural leather initially darkens unevenly; over time a uniform, deep patina develops which simultaneously acts as a natural surface protector. Each wallet develops individually – no two pieces look alike.
• Undyed natural colour: The light, slightly reddish-brown tone is not applied pigment, but results solely from the tanning method. Scars and colour variations in the leather are authenticity marks, not flaws.
• Hand-finished in Germany: Cutting, stitching and assembly take place in the German manufactory. The seams and edges are carefully executed; the wallet lies flat and compact in a trouser pocket.
• Well-thought-out compartment layout for everyday use: 2 note compartments allow separate storage (e.g. by currency or purpose), the coin pocket sits separately, 3 credit card slots and 2 ID card slots cover typical card requirements – without unnecessary bulk.

Use & Tips

• Break-in period: The natural leather is initially quite firm. During the first days of use it will adapt to your wearing comfort and become more supple.
• Use initial moisture strategically: To accelerate patina development, rub the wallet evenly with a slightly damp soft cloth. The leather will darken briefly and lighten again as it dries – after this it will respond more calmly to raindrops.
• No oils or waxes during the initial phase: Care products can permanently fix stains in the early stages. The leather initially needs only use and time.
• Insert credit cards carefully: The leather will give – if you don't overfill the card slots, you'll keep a slim, pocket-friendly wallet.
• Storage: Keep dry and airy; avoid plastic wrapping or closed bags, as the breathable leather requires air circulation.

The tanning agents come from plant extracts (barks, roots, fruits); they stabilise the hide structure without synthetic additives. The undyed natural leather (natural) carries no dye – its light brown-reddish tone is solely a result of this tanning method, which is also called "red tanning". The uncoated, open-pore surface means the leather actually breathes and responds to environmental influences: moisture, hand perspiration and light are the tools with which individual patina forms over years. Scars, slight colour differences and structural variations between individual pieces are not production variations, but an expression of the natural finishing process.
