Sonnenleder Pencil Case "Grass" natural
The Sonnenleder writing case "Grass" in natural is a compact leather case for three writing instruments – crafted entirely by hand from Southern German cowhide, tanned in Germany using traditional vegetable tanning methods in the pit. The natural colour showcases the light, warm beige of undyed leather: firm and velvety to the touch, with a subtle, characteristic leather scent that's noticeable from the moment you first open it. Each piece is unique thanks to the lively, open-pored surface of pit-tanned leather – and continues to evolve with use, light and warmth.
Features
- Leather-covered rubber loops: Three sewn-in rubber loops hold fountain pens and pencils securely without play – the leather covering over the loops protects writing instruments from direct contact with the rubber band and prevents marks on lacquered or coated bodies.
- Leather pocket for flat companions: A separate inner compartment holds a ruler up to 14 cm in length, stamps or folded notes – flat, within reach and without rummaging.
- Leather lining: The entire interior is also made of leather – no synthetic lining that could scratch writing instruments or cause static charge.
- Polished metal zip: The quality zip runs smoothly and closes the case completely – fountain pens lie protected and cannot slip out.
- Vegetable pit tanning: The cowhide is tanned using traditional methods without chrome or heavy metal salts. The result is leather with high structural density, open-pored surface and natural shape stability – it absorbs care products directly and develops an individual patina over time.
- Lively natural surface: Sun, rain and warmth darken the leather unevenly over time and give it a characteristic, personal patina. Each case develops its own character.
- Pure handcraft, Made in Germany: Crafted in the German Sonnenleder manufactory from selected Southern German hides with short, traceable supply routes.
Use & Tips
- For the desk: The case holds one fountain pen and two further pens up to 14 cm in length – ideal as a compact daily kit for office, desk or bag.
- Transport fountain pens safely: The leather-covered loops hold ink rollers, fountain pens with converters or piston fillers stable and scratch-free – even when tilted in your bag.
- Leather care: The natural leather responds well to natural leather care (e.g. colourless leather fat or beeswax polish). Regular care intensifies the patina and protects the surface permanently.
- Break it in: New Sonnenleder is initially firm and slightly stiff – after a few weeks of use it becomes softer and gradually adapts to your writing instruments.
- As a gift: The case is supplied without contents. Combined with a fountain pen or a high-quality pen, it makes a complete, personal gift in itself.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit tanning – also called vegetable tanning – is considered the oldest preserved leather-making process in Europe. The hides spend weeks to months in vegetable tanning solutions made from tree bark and roots; the slow process penetrates the collagen structure evenly and produces leather with considerable substance that deforms permanently under pressure and absorbs care products directly into the fibres. Unlike chrome-tanned leather, it contains no heavy metal salts; the surface remains open-pored. The natural colour of the Grass case is completely undyed – the warm beige shows the true tone of the tanning process and gradually matures through UV light and skin oils into a deeper amber tone. The Southern German origin of the hides stands for short, controlled supply routes as part of the manufactory's ecological alignment.
