Sonnenleder Pencil Roll "Kästner" natural
The "Kästner" pen roll from Sonnenleder is a handcrafted pen case made from vegetable-tanned South German cowhide. The natural surface has a warm, soft feel and a distinctive leather scent that's immediately noticeable when you first unfold it. Over time, the leather develops an individual patina through light, heat and occasional moisture – making each piece unique.
Features
- Vegetable pit-tanning from South German hides: Pit-tanning is the slowest and gentlest tanning process. The leather matures over months in vats of plant-based tannins – the result is a dense, breathable structure with a lively, unequalised surface.
- Space for three pens up to 17 cm long: Fountain pens, pencils or fine-tip pens can be laid side by side; the maximum length of around 17 cm covers most common writing instruments.
- Leather flap on the side for tip protection: A flap made from the same leather folds over the nib tips or refill tips and prevents damage during transport – protecting both the tips and any lined paper in the case.
- Additional leather pocket for flat items: The separate compartment holds a ruler, scissors or thin cards, and keeps the case fully stocked as compact travel accessories.
- Two leather straps as closure: No metal, no magnetic fastener – the rolled case is secured by two simple straps that won't damage the leather and become more supple over time.
- Lively patina through use: Rain, sun and body heat change the natural colour of the undyed leather over months and years. Wear marks, discolouration and impressions are not defects – they document the story of the piece.
- Entirely handmade: Each "Kästner" pen roll is individually crafted, cut and sewn by Sonnenleder.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens: Fountain pens up to around 15–16 cm in length (capped) fit easily into the three compartments. The leather flap provides particularly reliable protection for the nib when rolling up.
- Pencils and mechanical pencils: Sharpened pencils benefit especially from the protective flap; the soft leather surface of the compartments won't scratch lacquered shafts.
- Care tip for new rolls: Thinly applied, colourless leather grease or pure beeswax makes the leather more supple from the start and protects the surface during its first encounter with rain.
- Ruler in the compartment: A 15 cm wooden or metal ruler fits in the separate pocket – handy for sketchbooks or as an addition to your portable drawing kit.
- Shape the patina actively: If you want the natural leather to age dark and evenly, apply a thin layer of leather balm and carry the roll close to your body – body heat and slight moisture speed up even toning.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit-tanning is a rarity today: only a handful of tanneries worldwide still practise this method, in which hides are gradually placed in pits over many months with increasingly concentrated tanning solutions. The result differs structurally from quickly chrome-tanned leather – the fibres are more densely networked, the leather absorbs and releases moisture more slowly, and shows no synthetically applied uniformity effect. For the "Kästner" roll, Sonnenleder uses selected South German cowhides, whose scars, veins and slight irregularities remain visible in the natural colour – an expression of a surface that has been neither sanded nor concealed.
