Sonnenleder Pencil Roll "Kästner" mocha brown
The "Kästner" pen roll from Sonnenleder is a handcrafted leather case made from vegetable-tanned cowhide – pit-tanned using a method that allows the leather time to develop genuine character. The warm mocha-brown is not an applied colour, but rather an expression of the natural, vibrant surface of the South German cowhide used. With every use, every raindrop and every hour of sunshine, the patina transforms – the case becomes a personal piece over time.
Features
- Space for up to three writing instruments with a length of up to approximately 17 cm – suitable for fountain pens, liquid ink pens and most standard-length ballpoints.
- Side leather flap protects nibs and tips from pressure and contact – no direct rubbing against hard edges.
- Additional leather pocket for flat accessories such as a ruler, scissors or refill cartridges.
- Two leather straps for closure – no zip, no elastic band, no metal. The case remains entirely made from one material: leather.
- Vegetable pit-tanning using selected South German cowhides – a slow, resource-conscious process that creates a dense, breathable leather structure.
- Pure handcraftsmanship: meticulous stitching, no machine mass production.
- Vibrant, ever-changing surface – each piece develops its own unique patina through use and becomes a one-of-a-kind item.
Use & Tips
- For daily use in the office or on the go: Three writing instruments at hand, protected by the leather flap – ideal for fountain pens with delicate nibs.
- As a travel case: The rolled-up form stores neatly in a bag or rucksack without the writing instruments getting tangled.
- Care with colourless leather balm or beeswax keeps the leather supple and deepens the patina over time. Heavily tinted care products alter the natural mocha tone.
- The case can safely get wet – vegetable-tanned leather tolerates moisture as long as it dries slowly in the air afterwards and not directly by a radiator.
- If you switch between several writing instruments daily, you can sort the three slots by weight: heavy liquid ink pens in the middle, light mechanical pencils on the outside – so the roll sits evenly in your hand.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit-tanning is the oldest and most time-consuming leather production method: hides rest in pits for months with vegetable tannins from barks such as oak or spruce. Unlike industrial chrome tanning, which is completed in hours, this creates leather with significantly higher density, tear strength and breathability. The surface remains unsealed – it reacts to oils, water and light, which makes the individual patina possible in the first place. The use of South German cowhides means shorter transport routes and traceable origin of raw materials. The noticeably firm, yet not stiff feel in the hand – cool at first touch, warming quickly – is typical of leather in this tanning class.
