The Fichte pen roll from Sonnenleder is a rollable writing instrument case made from vegetable-tanned leather – in black, dyed throughout the leather, with an open-pore, unsealed surface. The leather carries a characteristic, subtle natural scent and feels velvety and tactile in the hand. Each piece is handcrafted from selected South German hides, tanned in pits using plant extracts – a process that preserves the leather's lively, uncoated structure.

• Pit tanning with plant extracts: The leather is tanned in pits using solutions made from bark, roots and fruits – no chrome salts, no synthetic additives. The surface remains open and unsealed: scars, colour variations and the natural leather grain remain visible and distinctive.
• Six loops for writing instruments up to 17 cm: Fountain pens, ballpoints, fineliners, mechanical pencils, rulers – everything up to approximately 17 cm in length fits here. The rubber webbing loops hold the instruments securely without stressing the leather.
• Leather flap on the side for nib protection: A specially sewn leather flap covers the tips of inserted pens and protects delicate fountain pen nibs during transport.
• Separate leather pocket: An additional leather pocket provides space for a ruler, eraser or similar flat items.
• Two leather straps as closure: The rolled pen case is held together by two leather straps – no metal fittings, no buckles. The closure can be adjusted individually.
• Living patina over time: The unsealed surface responds to heat, moisture and light: rain, sun and hand warmth gradually change the colour tone. Over time, the patina deepens and makes the case a truly personal piece.

The pit tanning that Sonnenleder uses takes six to twelve weeks – the hides pass through several pits with progressively more concentrated tanning solutions from plant extracts. The result is a leather with no sealing layer, whose surface reacts directly to environmental influences. Coloured versions like this black are dyed throughout – the colour goes into the leather, not just on the surface. The scars, veins and individual structural characteristics of each hide remain visible: Sonnenleder deliberately does not conceal them. Each pen roll thus carries the biography of the hide from which it was cut.
