Polish Notebook Klasyk dot grid black (A5)
Klasyk is a hand-sewn notebook from Poland, crafted by Papierniczeni, a small studio in Kraków. Its black cover, made from thick cardboard with a linen spine, feels sturdy and subtly textured; the gold-embossed word "Notes" on the spine is the only embellishment it needs. Inside: 160 pages of warm-white, dot-grid 100 gsm paper, FSC-certified and explicitly designed for fountain pens.
Features
- Hand-sewn thread binding: The thread binding holds the signatures together permanently and allows the notebook to open completely flat – both pages of a spread lie evenly without the cover pushing back.
- Linen spine: The textile spine gives the cover both flexibility and stability; it withstands everyday wear without tearing or creasing.
- 100 gsm warm-white paper: The paper is smooth enough for fine fountain pen strokes, yet textured enough to provide pleasant feedback whilst writing. Ink dries evenly; show-through is minimal.
- 5 mm dot grid: The 5 mm dot spacing is wide enough for legible handwriting, yet tight enough for structured layouts, sketches or bullet-journal systems.
- FSC-certified paper: The paper comes from responsibly managed forests – certification is documented and traceable.
- Gold-embossed title on spine: Discreet typography that remains instantly recognisable on the shelf or in a case.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens: The 100 gsm paper handles wet inks and broad nibs beautifully – shading and sheen stand out on the smooth surface. Those writing with a stub nib or flex nib will notice minimal feathering at the stroke edges.
- Fineliners and gel pens: The surface has enough grip that fineliners won't slip; quick-drying tips produce sharp, clear lines.
- Bullet journalling and layouts: The flat-opening behaviour of the thread binding is crucial for two-page spreads – no crease down the centre, no fighting the cover.
- Ink and storage: If you enjoy experimenting with heavily pigmented or iron gall-based inks, allow a short drying time; on 100 gsm paper, smudging is rarely an issue even with water-based inks.
- On the move: The 205 × 152 mm format fits snugly into a back pocket and comfortably into any bag; the sturdy cardboard cover protects the pages without needing an additional sleeve.
For Bookbinding Enthusiasts
Papierniczeni handcraft the Klasyk in their Kraków studio. The thread binding uses classical signature sewing: individual page signatures are sewn together with thread and then glued to the linen spine – a method that, when executed carefully, is considerably more durable than machine-glued bindings and prevents the book block from splitting even after years of use. The linen spine is not merely decorative but a functional part of the binding construction: it flexibly connects the book block and cover, so the notebook retains its shape even after frequent flat opening.
