Postalco Notebook Signal Red (A6)
The Postalco Ringbook A6 in Signal Red is a spiral-bound notebook in pocket format, manufactured in Japan since 2004. The cover is made from starch-pressed cotton (Pressed Cotton), produced using the same machines originally developed for tent fabrics – this creates a tactile, slightly irregular texture that develops further with use. Inside, you'll find Postalco's Pin-Graph paper: a 1×1 mm grid in blue, chlorine-free and ecologically manufactured.
Features
- Spiral binding with brass ring, semi-recessed positioning: The spiral is not positioned at the paper edge, but slightly recessed on the cover – this allows the notebook to stand flat on a shelf and keeps the spine writable.
- Completely flat-opening: The spiral binding allows the notebook to open completely flat, so both pages are writable without resistance – no lifting pages, no bending.
- Pin-Graph paper, 1×1 mm blue: The fine grid is subtle enough not to dominate your view, yet provides precise guidance for handwriting, sketches and tables. The paper surface has a slight texture that gently resists the pen and allows for more controlled handwriting.
- Chlorine-free and ecologically manufactured: The paper is produced without chlorine bleaching; the page thickness prevents show-through with most pens.
- Pressed-Cotton cover, PFAS-free: The cotton is starch-impregnated and lightly water-resistant treated, without a waterproof coating. Natural irregularities in the fabric – knots, slight creases – are part of the material and not defects.
- Corners cut at 45° angle: The bevelled paper corners reduce fraying in everyday pocket use.
- Horizontal and vertical use: The format works in both orientations without a rigid page system.
- Made in Japan: Manufactured in Tokyo in collaboration with Japanese family businesses and small workshops.
Use & Tips
- On the go and in meetings: A6 fits into any jacket or bag pocket. The flat-opening design makes the notebook just as comfortable on your knee as at a desk.
- Writing instruments: Pin-Graph paper works well with ballpoints, fineliners, fibre-tip pens and pencils. Fountain pens with fine to medium nibs write pleasantly on the slightly textured surface; wetter pens or broad nibs may require extra drying time.
- Individual pages removable: The spiral binding allows you to cleanly remove individual sheets – practical for notes that need to be passed on.
- Write on the spine: Because the spiral is not positioned at the paper edge, a narrow strip of spine remains free – multiple notebooks can be labelled and filed this way on a shelf.
- Cover care: If wet, pat dry rather than rubbing. Do not store near heaters or air conditioning units, as the cover may warp.
- Expect patina development: The white base colour of the cotton fabric becomes more prominent over time, and the fabric becomes softer – Signal Red develops its own character through use.
For Notebook Enthusiasts
The Pin-Graph grid is a Postalco proprietary design: 1×1 mm in a muted blue tone that provides orientation on white paper without appearing obtrusive when photographing or scanning pages. The paper surface has a fine mechanical texture – it offers minimal resistance to the pen, which is particularly beneficial for fast handwriting, resulting in a more even pressure pattern. The Pressed-Cotton cover is manufactured using machines originally developed for tent fabric: the starch process compresses the fabric without coating it, preserving breathability and natural feel. PFAS-free treatment is not a standard feature in water-resistant textile covers.
