Postalco Notebook Dark Blue (A5)
The Postalco A5 Ring Notebook in Dark Blue is a spiral-bound notebook with steel-wire binding, pressed-cotton cover, and Postalco's own 1 mm pin-graph paper – manufactured unchanged in Japan since 2004. The dark-blue tinted cotton cover is made from starched, pressed cotton fabric laminated onto heavy cardboard: a textile surface with a subtle texture that becomes softer with use, and whose weave pattern becomes increasingly visible over time. Inside, the paper has a light texture – grippy enough to guide your pen without resistance.
Features
- Steel-wire spiral binding: The notebook lies completely flat and folds back 360°. The spine is positioned so you can write directly on it – ideal for shelf storage and filing.
- Pressed Cotton cover (PFAS-free): Starched cotton fabric laminated onto heavy cardboard, with a subtle water-repellent finish. No synthetic leather, no plastic – the material bears its history of use visibly: the colour lightens slightly, the weave pattern becomes more pronounced.
- Rounded corners: Protect the cover from fraying and give the notebook its characteristic profile.
- Pin-graph paper, 1 × 1 mm (blue): Postalco's own micro-grid – fine enough to read as blank at first glance, precise enough to guide lines, tables and sketches. Chlorine-free and ecologically produced.
- Good page opacity: The paper weight noticeably reduces show-through with most writing instruments.
- Cover overhang: When the cover folds back, it extends beyond the page – your hand finds a rest, making clean writing all the way to the bottom line easier.
- Open format: Use horizontally or vertically – no fixed page orientation.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens and gel pens: The lightly textured paper offers minimal resistance to the nib – fountain pens with medium or broad nibs glide smoothly without skipping. Inks with longer drying times need a moment; pause briefly when turning pages.
- Pencil and fine-liners: The paper texture holds the pen tip well and is ideal for technical drawings, diagrams and clean lettering on the 1 mm grid.
- Project planning and layouts: The 1 mm grid allows scale-accurate sketches, column divisions and structured lists without a ruler.
- Fully open notebook: On a small desk, held in your hand, in meetings – the spiral binding holds the book stably open in any position.
- Writing on the spine: The steel wire is intentionally positioned so the notebook spine remains free to write on. A fine-liner or narrow-tipped ballpoint works perfectly.
- Cover care: Cotton is a natural material – minor irregularities in the weave and light creasing are part of the material, not a defect. Avoid heavy moisture; light dampness wipes away on its own.
For Notebook Enthusiasts
The pressed-cotton cover is produced on the same machines originally used for tent fabric – which explains the unusual density and strength of the weave combined with a textile feel. The fabric is starch-treated (starch-pressed), giving the cover its lightly textured, almost paper-like stiffness without synthetic coating. With increased use, the starch gradually gives way: the surface becomes softer, the thread structure emerges, the colour lightens slightly at contact points – an ageing process that mirrors the patina of leather. The pin-graph paper has been Postalco's unchanged original for over 15 years, printed with precision in Japan: the grid is so fine that it visually almost disappears at normal reading distance, yet becomes an immediately available orientation guide whenever you need it.
