The MD Notebook in A7 format is a pocket companion that consistently focuses on what matters: the paper. The cream-colored MD paper (80 g/m²) has been continuously refined since the 1960s for use with all types of writing instruments. The 5-mm dot grid provides structure without dominating – the light green dots visually recede while writing. The Japanese thread binding allows a complete 180° opening angle, so the notebook lies flat even when held with just one hand.

Special Features

  • MD Paper, 80 g/m², cream-white: The slightly tinted, silky-smooth surface allows fountain pen nibs – from fine EF to broad nib – to glide without resistance. Ink dries quickly and neither bleeds nor shows through; even water-based ink with longer drying times shows minimal show-through.
  • 5-mm dot grid, light green: Two prominent orientation dots at the top edge indicate where the date or heading should go. The grid works equally well for flowing text and for small sketches, diagrams, or bullet journal layouts – without lines visually overloading the image.
  • Thread binding, Japanese design: The visible spine made of textile tape is deliberately unlaminated – a design detail that reveals the handcrafted interior. The binding holds up even with intensive use over months.
  • Format A7 (105 × 74 × 10 mm): Small enough for any jacket pocket, large enough for complete sentences and compact drawings. The notebook can be held in the hand and folded in half without straining the binding.
  • 176 pages: Sufficient for an intensively used daily companion journal over several months.
  • Ribbon bookmark and index stickers: A green ribbon bookmark marks the current page; included index stickers (label and bookplate format) allow easy chapter or topic marking at the book edge.
  • Glassine paper cover: The semi-transparent protective cover provides light protection from abrasion and gives the notebook its characteristically simple, almost book-like appearance.

Application & Tips

  • Fountain pens and ink: MD paper is optimized for fountain pens – even wet inks like iron gall or highly saturated pigment inks show little to no show-through on this paper. Fine nibs (EF, F) produce precise lettering; broad nibs benefit from the smooth surface with clean line edges.
  • Bullet journal in miniature format: The 5-mm dot grid fits exactly to common grid layouts. On A7, a compressed daily page emerges that works as an index, habit tracker, or quick weekly overview.
  • Sketches and hand lettering: The cream-colored paper provides contrast to black ink and white fountain pen inks show well. The paper is not designed for heavily watered watercolor sketches – but light watercolor washes in thin layers work without strong wrinkling.
  • On-the-go notes: The notebook can be held open in one hand while writing – practical in situations without a writing surface. A gel pen or ballpoint pen with oil-based refill works just as reliably here as a fountain pen.
  • Cases and accessories: The A7 format fits into the MD cases made of clear vinyl, paper fiber, or goat leather from the LUIBAN range and protects the glassine paper long-term.

For Paper Enthusiasts

MD paper was originally conceived as "Diary Paper" (hence the name MD) and has since been further developed in consultation with various inks and writing instruments. At 80 g/m², it falls in the medium weight range – heavy enough to be written on both sides, light enough that the A7 notebook doesn't take up much space in a jacket pocket. The creamy tone of the paper (not pure white) minimally reduces the contrast between paper and ink – making extended writing more pleasant and bringing fountain pen inks with shading into particularly beautiful effect. The thread binding is traditionally Japanese-designed: the spine is not reinforced with cardboard, so the book lies completely flat across the entire spread.
