MD Product Notebook ruled (A7)
The MD Notebook is a Japanese notebook whose entire concept revolves around a single premise: the paper. MD Paper – continuously refined since the 1960s – is cream-colored, silk-smooth, and at 80 g/m² thin enough for a slim notebook, yet dense enough to prevent show-through. The A7 format measures 105 × 74 × 10 mm and fits in every pocket. The lined version features a bold center line that visually divides each page into two halves.
Special Features
- MD Paper, 80 g/m²: The smooth, calendered surface allows fountain pens – from fine EF to broad nibs – to glide nearly effortlessly. Fountain pen ink absorbs evenly without feathering or bleeding through.
- 7 mm line spacing with center line: The prominently printed center line on every page allows you to use a page as two narrow columns or divide a double spread into four quadrants – practical for bullet points, vocabulary, daily notes, and appointments side by side.
- Thread stitching: The pages are bound with thread. The notebook lies completely flat on the table – without cupping in the center, without a springy spine. Writing is done from the first to the last page with the same hand position.
- Exposed spine with cotton tape: A cardboard cover has been deliberately omitted. The spine shows the cotton adhesive tape openly – the paper itself, with its matte, slightly textured feel, is the binding.
- Glassine wrapper: The notebook comes in a semi-translucent glassine paper – light, crisp, protective – like the dust jacket of an old book.
- Bookmark ribbon and index stickers: A ribbon bookmark marks the current page; printed and blank index stickers can be attached to the cover or spine to label topics.
- Acid-free: MD Paper is acid-free – pages do not yellow and remain legible long-term.
Application & Tips
- Fountain pens and water-based inks: MD Paper is optimized for fountain pen ink. High-saturation inks (iron gall, pigment ink) dry reliably without fiber swelling – no document permanence guarantee without explicit testing of the specific ink, as MD Paper is not certified for archival use.
- Pencil and fine liners: The smooth surface offers little resistance to pencil – ideal for very fine graphite tips (2H, 3H) as there is no fraying at the stroke. Fine liners glide cleanly without feathering.
- Center line as structural aid: The page can be used as two columns: left keyword, right details – or top tasks, bottom results. The double spread creates four clear fields without additional tools.
- Pocket format for on-the-go: A7 fits in a shirt pocket or small wallet compartment. Suitable as a constant companion for shopping lists, quick sketches, or appointment reminders – the ribbon bookmark keeps the current page accessible even without opening the notebook.
- Cover system: Matching protective covers for the MD Notebook are available in leather, paper, or transparent PVC (sold separately). Two MD Notebook Light in A7 format fit into one MD Cover A7.
For Paper Enthusiasts
MD Paper originated in Japan and has been continuously refined according to the Kaizen principle: every production batch is tested with various writing instruments – for feathering, drying, glide, and texture. The result is a paper that is noticeably smoother than typical European notebook paper, yet not so smooth that ink sits on the surface and smudges. The cream-colored finish (not pure white) reduces eye fatigue during extended writing sessions. At 80 g/m², MD Paper ranks in the upper range for thread-bound notebooks – heavy enough for wet inks, light enough for a slim notebook with 176 pages. The cotton tape on the exposed spine is not only aesthetic – it distributes the tension of the thread binding evenly and prevents individual pages from tearing even with frequent flat-opening.
