Sonnenleder Wallet "Tarn G" black
The Tarn G is a fully equipped combination wallet crafted from South German beef hide, tanned in Germany using traditional pit tanning with purely plant-based methods – a process that gives the leather its velvety feel, open-pore surface and characteristic, subtle scent. The German-made press stud closure secures the large coin compartment, and when folded, the wallet settles into a flat yet substantial hand shape. Each piece is distinctive, with its own surface texture and subtle colour variations – no two are alike.
Features
- South German beef hide, purely plant-based tanned: The hides are tanned in pits according to time-honoured recipes using tannins from roots, bark and fruits, then air-dried. The result is a breathable, open-pore leather with a firm yet lively feel – quite different from industrially chrome-tanned leather.
- Living patina over time: Through use and influences such as light and moisture, the leather develops an individual patina that characterises the surface and naturally protects it. Black leather displays this development in subtle depth contrasts.
- Coin compartment with coin tray: The generous coin compartment in the Vienna Box style opens flat and reveals the entire contents at a glance – practical when paying, as you don't need to feel around for coins.
- German-made press stud closure: The metal press stud securely closes the coin compartment and sits flush without digging into your trouser pocket.
- Six credit card slots: Hold standard card formats snugly and within easy reach – neither loose nor too tight, so cards won't stretch the slot walls over time.
- Every piece is unique: Natural colour variations and surface textures in the leather are not flaws but an expression of the living material's origin. Colour and structural variations from the product image are possible.
Use & Tips
- Breaking in: New Sonnenleder is initially quite stiff. The compartments loosen pleasantly through regular use – one to two weeks is enough for the wallet to settle into its final shape.
- Care: Plant-tanned leather takes commercial leather fats and waxes very well. Light rubbing every few months preserves suppleness; excessive care is unnecessary and can seal the surface.
- Moisture: If the wallet gets damp, simply reshape it and let it air dry – no hairdryer, no direct heat. The leather will otherwise shrink.
- Coin compartment with coin tray: The open coin tray is particularly useful when paying, letting you quickly select the right coins without rummaging through the rest of the contents.
- Note slot and ID card slot: The note slot holds folded receipts, till slips or business cards; the transparent or open ID card slot keeps your ID card visible and accessible without having to remove it.
For Leather Enthusiasts
Pit tanning is the oldest known tanning method and one of the most time-consuming: hides remain in pits for weeks in alternating concentrations of plant-based tanning liquors. This slow process allows the tannins to penetrate deep into the fibre structure, giving the leather exceptional density and tear strength – and explains why plant-tanned leather ages more durably than quickly tanned alternatives. The black finish of the Tarn G is created by dyeing the natural brown raw leather; beneath it, the open-pore fibre structure remains intact, retaining its characteristic grip. As the wallet is used, wearing habits reveal themselves as light scuff marks or glossy patches in the black – the most personal form of patina.
