Uni Mechanical Pencil Kuru Toga Wood Steel Blue (0.5 mm)
The Kuru Toga Wood in Steel Blue combines a genuine wenge wood grip with an aluminium shaft and the proven Kuru Toga mechanism. Wenge wood is renowned for its deep-dark grain with characteristic black stripes – warm to the touch, with a natural grip that differs distinctly from cool metal. What makes this model special: the wood develops its own patina with regular use, making your pencil increasingly personal over time.
Features
- Kuru Toga Motor (improved generation): A spring-driven gear mechanism rotates the lead slightly each time you lift the pencil from the paper. Instead of a flat wear surface, this creates an evenly conical point – line width remains stable throughout extended writing sessions.
- Nib Damper: An integrated damper in the lead sleeve cushions impact pressure and reduces lateral movement of the tip. The result: quieter, more controlled writing feel – noticeably so during rapid note-taking.
- Grip in genuine wenge wood: The wood is selected for its rich, dark colour and striking grain. It feels warm and dry in the hand, offers subtle natural grip without texturing, and doesn't cool down as much as metal or plastic.
- Shaft in aluminium, Steel Blue: The rear shaft is crafted from aluminium with a carefully finished surface. The interplay between the blue metal and dark wood grip creates a calm, material contrast.
- Balanced weight distribution: The metal shaft provides pleasant weight at the back, whilst the wood grip at the front offers light, warm control – overall weight is distributed so extended writing is possible without fatigue.
- Lead size 0.5 mm: Precise enough for tight handwriting in small notebooks, stable enough for fluid sketches without frequent lead advancement.
- Clip: Integrated metal clip for secure grip on notebook covers, pencil cases or shirt pocket.
Use & Tips
- Consistent line width whilst writing: The Kuru Toga mechanism works best with light to normal writing pressure. If you press hard with the lead, you slow down the rotation mechanism – light pressure keeps the point sharpest.
- Notes and note-taking: The 0.5 mm lead stays the same width across pages thanks to the rotation mechanism – ideal for densely written pages at university, college or in structured bullet journals.
- Technical drawings and sketches: Lines along rulers or stencils benefit from even lead wear; lines don't fray, even after longer passages.
- Wood care: The wenge wood grip changes over time. If you hold it regularly, it develops a personal, matured character on the surface – no maintenance required, the process happens naturally.
- Lead recommendation: Uni leads in hardnesses HB to 2B work particularly reliably with the Kuru Toga mechanism, as their consistency promotes even wear.
For Mechanical Pencil Enthusiasts
The Kuru Toga Wood is the first-ever Kuru Toga mechanical pencil with a genuine wood grip – not coated plastic, but wenge wood, renowned for its dense structure, pressure resistance and striking grain. The improved Kuru Toga motor in this generation works together with a nib damper: whilst the rotation mechanism turns the lead after each stroke cycle, the damper stabilises the lead sleeve against lateral movement. Together, this creates a combination that works for both rapid handwriting and controlled drawing. Materials: wenge wood, brass (internal mechanism), aluminium (shaft). Made in Japan.
