Wancher Fountain Pen Sekai Densho Ebony (6 Facets)
The Wancher Sekai Densho Ebony – 6 Facets is a fountain pen crafted from solid ebonywood, with a barrel ground into a regular hexagon. The six gently rounded facets feel warm and grounded in the hand – dense wood with noticeable weight that keeps the pen steady whilst writing. Because ebonywood naturally varies in grain and colour depth, each piece is unique. The cap closes magnetically with an integrated inner cap that prevents the ink from drying out.
Features
- Solid ebonywood, hexagonal: The barrel is crafted from a single block of solid wood and ground into six facets – the rounded edges sit more comfortably in the hand than a smooth cylindrical body, without being sharp. The natural grain of the ebonywood remains fully visible.
- Wancher magnetic closure with inner cap: The cap opens and closes magnetically, without threads. Inside sits a second cap that seals the nib hermetically – the ink won't dry out even during longer breaks between writing sessions.
- Jowo #5 stainless steel nib: The nib comes from JoWo (Germany) and is available in F or M. JoWo #5 nibs are renowned for consistent ink flow and a controlled, slightly springy writing point – perfectly tuned for aqueous fountain pen inks of all kinds.
- No rolling surface: The six facets prevent the pen from rolling off the desk – a practical detail for a wooden barrel without a clip.
- Filling system with standard connector: The pen accepts international standard cartridges or a converter – no proprietary system that limits your choice of ink.
Use & Tips
- Ink selection: The JoWo #5 nib works well with standard aqueous fountain pen inks – vibrant, shimmering or sheening inks really shine on smooth paper flow. Shading-rich inks enhance the character of the nib.
- Nib sizes F or M: The F nib suits narrow-lined notebooks, smooth paper and precise writing; the M nib has an advantage with sheening inks because more ink flows and colour play becomes more visible.
- Caring for ebonywood: Ebonywood is one of the densest and naturally most oil-rich woods – it needs little maintenance. If you wish, you can occasionally treat the barrel with a drop of natural wood oil to enhance the grain. Avoid prolonged contact with water or long ink baths.
- Closing the magnetic cap correctly: The magnet engages noticeably – push it in until you hear a audible click, so the inner cap seals completely. When closed properly, the pen will start reliably even after days without priming.
- Posting: Due to the weight of the wooden barrel (approx. 27 g without cap), writing without the cap posted is recommended – the balance point then sits comfortably forward in the grip zone.
For Wood Enthusiasts
Ebonywood is among the hardest and densest commercially used timbers worldwide (Brinell hardness several times higher than European utility woods), giving it a characteristic cool, almost stone-like feel when first picked up – which quickly transforms into a rich, warm weight from body heat. The Sekai Densho form draws on Wancher's engagement with Kinma lacquerwork: the flat faceted surfaces stem from the idea that flat planes offer more design possibilities than a simple cylinder – and are simultaneously more demanding to grind than a continuous curve. Should you wish to swap the nib: the #5 JoWo nib is a standard format that can be changed without tools and is compatible with the broad ecosystem of JoWo-compatible aftermarket nibs.
