Kaweco Gel Roller Sport AL Raw
The Kaweco Sport AL Raw is a gel roller made from untreated aluminium – no anodising, no protective coating. The material retains its natural, cool metallic feel and develops over time a unique patina of fine wear marks that turn every pen into a one-of-a-kind piece. Closed, it measures a compact 10.5 cm and grows to 13 cm with the cap posted – the classic Sport principle: small in your pocket, fully functional in your hand.
Features
- Untreated aluminium (Raw finish): No anodising, no coating – the surface is deliberately left open. This means: a cool, slightly matte feel that subtly changes with every month of use. Scratches and wear become part of your personal history with the pen.
- Gel refill with ceramic ball: The ceramic ball rolls more smoothly and with less resistance than a steel ball. The result is a soft, flowing line without writing pressure – ideal for longer writing sessions and smooth, continuous strokes.
- Line width 0.7 mm: Available in black and blue. The line width sits between a fine rollerball and a classic ballpoint – precise enough for notes, bold enough for clear handwriting.
- Compact octagonal format: The characteristic eight-sided barrel of the Sport series sits securely in your hand, prevents rolling across the desk, and gives the pen its unmistakable silhouette.
- Post mechanism: The cap slips onto the end of the pen (not screwed), so switching between compact and full length is quick and straightforward.
Use & Tips
- Trouser pocket, notebook, jacket pocket: At 10.5 cm closed, the pen fits anywhere – even without a clip. If you want to secure it, you can retrofit a separate Kaweco Sport clip.
- Paper compatibility: The gel refill works particularly smoothly on smooth, calendered papers. On textured or rough surfaces, the line can appear slightly coarser – ideal for notebooks with a smooth finish.
- For left-handers: Since the gel refill releases ink in a controlled way compared to classic rollerballs, the line dries faster. This noticeably reduces smudging when your writing hand passes over it.
- Shaping the patina intentionally: If you carry the Raw pen daily, you'll notice how the grip area becomes lighter where frequently touched and duller where less touched. A leather case protects the surface when travelling, if you prefer more even ageing.
- Refill replacement: The Kaweco Sport gel refill is the standard format – available in black and blue, 0.7 mm line width. The refill can be changed by pulling off the cap and unscrewing the barrel end.
For Material Enthusiasts
The Raw finish differs fundamentally from anodised AL Sport variants: whilst anodising creates an aluminium oxide layer that actively resists scratches, raw aluminium remains completely unsealed. The surface shows marks immediately – grip wear, fine scratches from your pocket, indentations from your notebook clip. The result is a lively, never-replicable surface story that doesn't occur with anodised versions. If you approach a pen with expectations of a flawless surface that stays that way, you're better served by another AL Sport variant – but if you understand your pen as a personal working object, the Raw gives you a form of material-based authenticity that develops with every use.
