The Kaweco Liliput Capped is a capped ballpoint pen crafted from solid copper – compact, satisfying weight in hand, and a unique piece that evolves over time. Copper develops a natural patina as it ages: each pen bears the marks of its use and shifts in surface and colour individually. The screw-on cap extends the barrel to a comfortable writing length and protects the refill safely during transport. Three housing components, no frills – a design that has endured since 1908.

Features

  • Solid copper, throughout: Barrel and cap are crafted from untreated copper – the cool, weighty feel in your hand on first grip gradually transforms into a warm, gleaming surface with personal patina.
  • Screw-on cap as extension: Closed, the Liliput measures just 95 mm – pocket-sized for shirt, notebook spine or small case. Cap screwed on at the back gives 125 mm writing length, comfortable for longer writing sessions.
  • D1 refill in blue: The D1 ballpoint refill included is not archival-quality and designed for everyday writing. The D1 format is widely available, allowing easy replacement with refills in different line widths and colours.
  • Push-button mechanism: The refill extends via a push-button at the pen's end – no twisting, no unscrewing to deploy the refill.
  • Three housing components: Cap, barrel and grip section – the minimalist construction reduces potential weak points and keeps the weight manageable despite solid metal construction.
  • Made in Germany: Manufactured in Nuremberg, short shipping distances.

Use & Tips

  • Everyday pocket companion: 95 mm fits into nearly any inside pocket – the Liliput Capped is ideal as a compact companion for notebook, diary or sketchpad. The cap secures the refill reliably without a clip catching on fabric.
  • Cap screwed on at the back: The cap can be screwed onto the rear end whilst writing and provides the pen with necessary balance and writing length – important for such a compact format.
  • Swap the D1 refill: The D1 format is compatible with a wide range of replacement refills, including fast-drying or pigmented variants. For a drier, more saturated line, oil-based D1 ballpoint refills are worth exploring.
  • Shape the patina intentionally: Those who want to keep the copper bright and polished can occasionally buff it with a soft cloth. Those wanting to encourage patina can carry the pen directly in hand – body heat and air exposure accelerate the shift to warm brown and gold tones.
  • Engraving and personalisation: The smooth copper surface is ideal for laser engraving – as a personal keepsake or gift.

For Liliput Enthusiasts

The Liliput series has existed in virtually unchanged form for over a century. The capped ballpoint – known as the "Capped" – is an extension of the classic push-button variant: instead of a button at the end, a screw-on cap with internal threads secures the refill. The copper is fitted without any surface coating, allowing it to come into direct contact with skin, air and light. The resulting patina is not wear, but an inherent material process – similar to uncoated brass cutlery or aged architectural copper. Those with several Liliput variants will notice that each pen develops a different colour tone after a few months, depending on how it's carried, skin chemistry and storage conditions.
