Lamy Ballpoint Pen CP1
The Lamy CP1 ballpoint is a slender, cylindrical pen made from aluminium and stainless steel, powder-coated matt black – cool and compact in the hand, with a silhouette that has remained convincingly unchanged since 1974. CP stands for Cylindric Pen: purposeful form without ornament, only what is necessary. Designed by Gerd Alfred Müller, who previously worked for Braun and designed in the Bauhaus tradition, the series earned an Industrie Forum Design Award in 1977. The included LAMY M16 high-capacity refill with black, archival-quality ink writes immediately – precise, consistent, and durable.
Features
- Cylindrical form in aluminium and stainless steel: The slender body (9.5 mm diameter) sits neutrally and comfortably in the hand without fatigue, with no grip indentations or tapers that enforce a particular grip. Ideal for those who write for extended periods.
- Matt black powder-coated: The powder-lacquer finish is resistant to abrasion and dampens reflections – the pen remains evenly matt even after years of use.
- Solid, sprung stainless steel clip: The clip sits firmly, gives way under pressure, and holds the pen securely in pockets, notebooks or shirt pockets without damaging materials.
- LAMY M16 high-capacity refill, F (fine) line width, archival-quality: The ink is archival-quality to DIN 16 554/2 – suitable for documents that must be filed or legally retained. Writing length is approximately 8,000 m.
- Bauhaus design lineage: Gerd Alfred Müller also designed the Lamy 2000. The CP1 continues the same design language: function shapes form, no detail is decoration.
- Made in Germany: Manufactured in Heidelberg.
Use & Tips
- Archive and office: The archival-quality M16 refill makes the CP1 the first choice when signatures, contracts or minutes must remain stable over the long term.
- Everyday writing: Fine line width suits closely-spaced notebooks, planners and smaller handwriting – clear lines without broad areas of colour.
- Swapping refills: The M16 high-capacity refill is available in further line widths (M, B) and colours and can be easily changed yourself.
- Combination with smooth paper: On calendered or coated paper surfaces, the paste ink of the M16 glides particularly evenly and renders the fine line width clearly.
- Pocket carry: Thanks to the sprung clip and smooth outer finish, the CP1 can be transported safely without a cap – the writing mechanism is secured against accidental extension.
For Design Enthusiasts
Gerd Alfred Müller designed the CP1 in 1974 as the direct successor to the Lamy 2000 (1966) – both designs share the maxim: no element without function. The cylindrical basic form, the flat-lying stainless steel feather clip, the matt surface without high-gloss accents – all of this is consistent Bauhaus practice in pen form. The CP1 received the Industrie Forum Design Award in 1977. The fact that this form has remained in the range for over five decades without requiring substantial revision speaks to the rightness of the original design.
