The Hobonichi Techo Day-Free (A5) is a Japanese-language monthly planner in two parts: a monthly calendar section at the front, followed by 171 numbered, undated grid paper pages. The slim book is half as thick as the complete Hobonichi Techo Cousin – printed on Tomoe River paper, thread-bound, and with rounded corners. For 2027, year beginning January, week starting Monday.

Special Features

  • Tomoe River Paper: This ultra-thin yet tear-resistant paper is renowned for its high ink fastness – fountain pen ink, gel pens, and water-based inks show minimal show-through and feathering on the smooth, slightly cool surface. The writing remains precise and clear.
  • Thread-bound like a dictionary: The thread stitching allows the book to lie completely flat – without needing to hold it open. When writing across the spine, no page springs back.
  • 171 undated grid paper pages: The 3.7 mm grid is fine enough for clean handwriting, large enough for sketches, diagrams, and pasted elements. Each page features a characteristic Japanese daily quote at the bottom – a subtle detail that gives the pages rhythm without overwhelming them.
  • Monthly calendar with overview: The monthly section covers December 2026 through March 2028 and matches the standard Cousin in grid layout and structure – including compatibility with A5 Cousin covers.
  • Year overview and annual index: For planning beyond the month: multi-year calendar plus four-page annual index January–December 2027.
  • Rounded page corners: Significantly reduces corner creasing and tearing from pocket transport.
  • Compact weight: Approximately 220 g – noticeably lighter than the complete Cousin with its 544 pages.

Use & Tips

  • Free journaling without date printing: If you don't want to write daily, you won't leave empty pages with date headers. The undated pages are simply used in sequence – or intentionally skipped.
  • Fountain pens and gel pens: Tomoe River paper displays fountain pen ink with particularly vibrant color; shading effects from pen and ink are distinctly visible. Quick-drying gel refills or oil-based ballpoint refills also work reliably.
  • Calligraphy and lettering: The smooth surface is suitable for broad-nib scripts with clean edge definition. Fine lettering with 0.3 or 0.5 mm fineliners benefits from the uniform grid as a guide.
  • Mixed-use planner: Many users manually divide the notebook – about 100 pages as self-created weekly overviews, the rest as free notebook for ideas, pasted elements, or sketches.
  • Cover compatibility: The book fits all Hobonichi Techo Cousin covers (A5) – including the BS-Lite covers specially developed for the Day-Free. This allows you to change the book each year while keeping the same cover.
  • White fountain pen ink: On the cream-colored Tomoe River paper, white fountain pen ink shows a distinct but warm contrast – for accents and lettering on dark backgrounds after initial impression, the result is however understated; opaque white works better on pre-painted areas.

For Planner Enthusiasts

The Day-Free is essentially the Cousin without a day-structured block – same page rhythm, same paper quality, but radically freer use and significantly slimmer. The 3.7 mm grid of Tomoe River paper is tighter than most European notebook paper, allowing significantly higher information density per page. The thread binding is executed so that no spine break occurs even when the book is fully opened – for users who write or draw along the edges or across the double page, a significant advantage. Since the book is in Japanese, month designations, weekdays, and daily quotes are in Japanese – for anyone using the book as a language or cultural contact, an independent appeal; for pure planning purposes, the calendar layout is intuitively readable even without Japanese knowledge.
