Hobonichi Planner Techo 2027 Day-Free Book (A6, jap.)
The Hobonichi Techo Day-Free (A6) combines a monthly calendar with an undated dot-grid notebook – making it the more flexible variant of the classic Techo. Instead of daily individual pages, you get 171 numbered grid pages that you can fill at your own pace, without schedule pressure. The paper is Tomoe River, printed in Japan – lightweight, smooth and designed for fountain pen ink.
Features
- Tomoe River Paper: This feather-light yet durable Tomoe River paper has a smooth, slightly cool surface that absorbs fountain pen ink with control and displays brilliant colours. Thanks to the refined fibre structure (since 2024), it resists bleed-through better and is lighter than previous versions – at the same thickness.
- Dictionary-style thread binding: The stitch binding allows the notebook to lie completely flat – pages stay open without needing to hold the book. Particularly pleasant for drawing, pasting or long writing sessions.
- 3.7 mm dot grid: The lightly printed dot grid (3.7 mm on the note pages, 3.45 mm on the monthly calendar pages) is fine enough for small handwriting, yet provides enough structure for layouts, tables or sketches.
- Monthly calendar (December 2026 – March 2028): The year index displays four months per double spread with note lines at the top. The month dates are labelled with Rokuyo – the traditional Japanese lucky day system commonly found on classic annual calendars.
- Undated notebook (171 pages): No pressure to work chronologically. Pages are numbered but undated – ideal for journalling, sketches, collages or bullet-journal structures on your own terms.
- Rounded page corners: Minimise creases and damage when carrying in your bag.
- Slim format: At 240 pages and approximately 110 g, the Day-Free is about half the weight of the full Techo Original – same size, less bulk.
- Individual serial number: A serial number is printed on the inside of the back cover – each copy is a unique item.
- Daily wisdom on every note page: The bottom of each grid page features a Japanese-language quote from the Hobonichi universe.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens and ink behaviour: Tomoe River Paper reacts to water-based fountain pen ink with intense, saturated colours and excellent shading. Ink takes slightly longer to dry on the smooth surface – if you use broad nibs or wet inks, give the pages a moment before turning. A quick test run on a back page is recommended.
- Fast-drying inks and gel pens: If you don't want to wait, opt for fast-drying gel pens or oil-based ballpoint refills – both work reliably on Tomoe River without smudging.
- Bullet journal / custom system: The 171 undated, numbered grid pages are perfect for index pages, collections, habit trackers or weekly planners to your own design – without pre-made structures getting in the way.
- Mixed media and collages: Light newspaper clippings, tickets and thin washi tape strips adhere well; heavy wet glue and lots of colour can cause the thin paper to ripple – for watercolours and wet techniques, test a small area first.
- Compatible covers: The Day-Free A6 fits all A6 Hobonichi Techo covers (standard size), including specially adapted BS-Lite covers.
- Week starts Monday: The calendar section begins weekly on Monday – compatible with European planning habits.
For Techo Enthusiasts
The Tomoe River Paper in the Hobonichi Techo underwent a fundamental redesign for the 2024 edition: the fibre structure was refined so the surface is even smoother and holds ink better – while simultaneously reducing weight despite identical thickness. The result is a paper that displays fountain pen ink with pronounced shading and sheen, but is more sensitive to water and moisture than calendered writing paper. The Day-Free is Japanese language – quotes, reference pages and the Rokuyo calendar are in Japanese – however the month and day numbers use standard numerals, so the planner section remains internationally readable. At 240 pages and just 8 mm spine width, it remains handbag-compatible even when a full cover is fitted.
