The Hobonichi Techo HON is a daily planner in book format: cover and interior are permanently bound together, so no separate cover is needed. The 2027 edition, illustrated by Yumi Kitagishi, depicts the lives of white cats and their friends in a world of dollhouses and small villages – drawn in Kitagishi's characteristic acrylic gouache style with rich colours and the warmth of hand-drawn art. Inside, the HON uses Tomoe River Paper and the proven A5 Cousin page layout: one full page per day, weekly overviews and monthly calendars on 3.7 mm dot grid paper.

Features

  • Permanently integrated hardcover: Yumi Kitagishi's illustration is printed directly onto the book cover – the HON requires no separate cover and fits as compactly in your hand as a regular book.
  • Tomoe River Paper: This ultra-thin, lightweight paper accepts ink evenly and provides a smooth, low-resistance writing feel. Fountain pens, fineliners and brush pens glide across it effortlessly; the paper is designed to minimise show-through, even with water-based inks.
  • 180° thread binding: The HON lies completely flat on the desk – pages don't spring back and require no holding. Both sides of a spread are fully accessible at the same time.
  • 3.7 mm dot grid paper: The fine point grid (light print, charcoal/red) structures the page without dominating – ideal for even handwriting as well as sketches, diagrams and small-scale calligraphy practice.
  • One page per day: Each day receives a full A5 page, supplemented by a daily timeline (5:00 to 4:00 the next day) and an English-language quote at the bottom of the page.
  • Two ribbon bookmarks: Sewn in two colours to permanently mark frequently used sections – such as daily and weekly pages.
  • Weekly overview & monthly calendar: In addition to the daily structure, the HON contains weekly spreads with two pages per week and monthly calendars from December 2026 to March 2028.

Use & Tips

  • Tomoe River and fountain pens: The paper responds to water-based fountain pen inks with subtle sheen and sharp line definition. Inks with high pigment content display particularly vibrant colours. If you want to turn the page quickly, test drying time at the edge – with very wet nibs, a brief blow-dry or blotting paper is recommended.
  • Brush pens and calligraphy: On 3.7 mm grid, small lettering scripts fit well; the grid provides baseline and x-height guidance without visually overwhelming the page. Flexible nibs and brushes work well as long as ink flow is moderate.
  • Daily page as mixed-media canvas: The A5 page offers plenty of room for notes, sketches, pasted-in tickets or stickers. Watercolours should be used with caution – the paper is thin and responds sensitively to excess moisture.
  • HON as a standalone planner: Since the cover is permanently integrated, there's no need to insert it into a separate cover. This makes the HON especially practical for bags without much buffer – the book spine protects the pages directly.
  • Compatibility with Cousin covers: The HON A5 can partially fit into Hobonichi Cousin covers (front or back cover), but not both sides simultaneously due to the rigidity of the hardcover.

For Planner Enthusiasts

The HON is the newest format in the Hobonichi ecosystem – available since 2024 and therefore still relatively new. Unlike the classic Cousin book, which is inserted into a separate cover, the HON's cover is glued directly to the book block: the result is a slimmer overall format with identical page content. The thread binding matches that of the Cousin and Original – the same 180° flat opening, same page stiffness when open. For the 2027 collection, the HON appears for the first time with a Yumi Kitagishi illustration; the theme "White Cat and Rabbit's Tea Room" is new and expands Kitagishi's previous world of everyday scenes with a tea room setting and rabbits as new characters. The Tomoe River Paper in the HON is specifically optimized for planner use: 52 g/m², calendered, with a slightly creamy tone – not identical to loose Tomoe River paper from other sources.
