The Hobonichi Techo HON is Hobonichi's iconic daily planner in its most distinctive form: hardcover, Tomoe River Paper, and a stitched thread binding that lets the book lie completely flat on your desk – all in a compact A6 format. The 2027 edition features a cover design by Hiroko Kubota titled "String Telephone Until the Moon is Full" – a visual world of calm, contemplative details rendered in Kubota's characteristically quiet narrative style. The HON needs no separate cover: the hardcover and bookmark are already integrated.

• Hardcover with thread embossing: The rigid yet gently flexible binding protects the pages without a separate cover – the year and design details are printed directly onto the boards, with silver foiling that shimmer in the light.
• Tomoe River Paper: This tissue-thin yet tear-resistant paper (designed specifically for planner formats) holds ink beautifully and shows virtually no bleed-through – even when layering multiple entries. Ideal for fountain pens, fineliners and gel pens. Due to the smooth, low-absorption surface, allow ink to dry briefly before touching the page.
• One day, one page: Each page displays the date, day of the week and moon phase at the top, plus an inspiring quotation footer and a mini monthly calendar for quick reference.
• 3.7 mm dot grid: The grid is printed in a subtle tone – discreet enough to ignore, precise enough to guide page layouts, sketches or table structures.
• Timeline column: A narrow hourly grid along the left margin enables time-based daily planning without restricting the rest of the space.
• Thread-bound – opens flat at 180°: The special stitched binding holds the book open without counter-pressure – both hands remain free for writing, drawing or pasting.

Use & Tips

• Fountain pens and Tomoe River: Tomoe River Paper responds beautifully to fountain pens: ink flows smoothly, shading effects stand out clearly. Fine to medium nibs work best; stub nibs and flex nibs are possible but require longer drying time.
• Gel pens and fineliners: Quick-drying gel pen refills work well for rapid daily notes; pigmented fineliners perform precisely on the grid. Non-archival watercolours or heavily saturated inks can easily cause the thin paper to wrinkle – apply sparingly.
• Bullet journal structure: The daily grid invites free page design: create collections, sketch habit trackers, write weekly goals in the timeline column.
• Use as a sketchbook: The smooth paper captures pencil and fineliner drawings with precision.
• Use monthly colours: Each month is printed in a different colour – a quick visual anchor when flipping through, which works well combined with colour-coded entries (e.g. different ink colours per month).

Hiroko Kubota has designed Hobonichi covers for several years, with designs that build thematically on one another – her visual worlds tell quiet, open stories in which animals, musical instruments and everyday objects stand in silent tension with each other. "String Telephone Until the Moon is Full" continues this serial narrative language. The HON format has existed since 2023 and is designed as an all-in-one unit: unlike the classic Techo Original version, where the book block and cover are chosen separately, the HON has a permanently integrated cover – with the advantage that there is no play between cover and block and the book is ready to use straight out of the box. The English-language A6 edition also includes an exclusive year-in-review page that is not included in the Japanese version.
