Hobonichi Planner 2027 HON Yumi Kitagishi: White Cat and Rabbit's Tea Room (A6, eng.)
The Hobonichi Techo HON is the hardcover edition of the classic A6 daily planner – "HON" simply means "book" in Japanese, and that's exactly how it travels: compact, self-contained, ready for the day. For 2027, the HON appears for the first time in a collaboration with illustrator Yumi Kitagishi, whose visual world lives between picture book and dollhouse nostalgia. The "White Cat and Rabbit's Tea Room" motif shows a waving house cat at the entrance door on the front cover, while rabbits brew tea and prepare little cakes – on the back cover, animals live in a house in book form. Year, flower vine at the spine, bow and lily of the valley are embossed in matte gold.
Special Features
- Hardcover directly on the block: The HON comes without a separate cover – the printed hardcover is permanently bound to the book block. This makes it slimmer than a Techo with a slip-on cover and ready to hand for your jacket pocket.
- 180° thread binding: The block lies completely flat without pages needing to be held – ideal for fountain pens that need some counter-pressure, and for wide sketches running across the spine.
- Tomoe River Paper: The extremely thin yet ink-resistant paper accepts fountain pen ink, gel pens, and brush ink without bleeding through. Water- and pigment-based inks show particularly rich color depth on the cream-colored pages.
- One day, one page: Every day from January 1st to December 31st, 2027 has its own page in 3.7 mm dot grid layout – plenty of space for planning, sketches, glued-in tickets, or daily notes.
- Quotes on every other page: English-language quotes on alternating pages – as a small thought stimulus without restricting writing space.
- Two ribbon bookmarks: Can mark the daily page and monthly calendar simultaneously.
- Matte gold foil printing: Year, flower vine at the book edge, as well as bow and lily of the valley motif are embossed in matte gold foil – subtly gleaming, not obtrusive.
- English edition: All text elements, month names, weekdays, and quotes in English – the planning pages are language-independent.
Application & Tips
- Fountain pen: Tomoe River paper is known for its fountain pen-friendly character – fine and medium nibs glide smoothly, inks dry with a delay and show pronounced sheening effects. Flex nibs can be controlled particularly well on the smooth paper.
- Gel pens and ballpoint pens: Fast-drying gel refills adhere well to the surface; oil-based ballpoint refills leave sharp, clear handwriting without smudging.
- Sketching and collaging: Use the daily page as a sketch page – Tomoe River holds light watercolor washes as long as the water amount remains moderate. Ticket stubs, labels, and postcard snippets can be easily glued in with liquid adhesive.
- Bullet journal method: The 3.7 mm dot grid is tight enough for clean tables and wide enough for legible handwriting in normal size.
- Cover on Cover: The HON can be protected from wear with a transparent protective film (HON A6 Cover on Cover) without obscuring the illustration motif.
- Pen band: The elastic pen band for HON A6/A5 keeps the block closed and offers a pen holder for two writing instruments of different widths.
For Techo Enthusiasts
The collaboration with Yumi Kitagishi is in its fourth round for 2027 – and is the illustrator's first appearance on the HON format. The cover motifs come from Kitagishi's "Dollhouse" series: detailed acrylic gouache illustrations with soft color transitions and a density of detail that reveals new elements with each additional look. Those who examine the book block page carefully will find the delicate flower vine in matte gold there – a printing detail that only becomes fully visible in side lighting. The Tomoe River paper in the HON is identical to that of the Techo Original: 52 g/m², cream-colored, with a slightly textured surface that minimally slows the ink flow and thus promotes sheening of iron-based inks.
