Hobonichi Weeks MEGA Planner 2027 Colours: Midnight Blue (engl.)
The Hobonichi Pocket Planner Weeks MEGA Colors: Midnight Blue for 2027 is a slim hardcover weekly planner in tall portrait format – narrow as a wallet, yet spacious enough for proper entries. The cover features bookbinding cloth in a deep midnight blue that conveys calm and focus; the year 2027 is embossed in silver. Inside, it uses Tomoe River paper and thread-stitched binding, allowing the block to lie completely flat. The English-language edition includes four additional grid pages compared to the Japanese version, with all quotes, weekday labels and bonus pages in English.
Features
- Tomoe River Paper, 3.55 mm grid print: Ultra-thin, smooth paper allows ink to dry slowly, giving fountain pen inks depth, shading and sheen. Ballpoints and gel pens glide smoothly; fibre-tip pens show clear, defined lines on the surface.
- Thread-stitched binding (Stitch Binding): Lies completely flat on the writing surface – no creasing, no resistance. Essential for spread layouts, stickers or full-page notes.
- MEGA paper volume: The MEGA version contains roughly three times more grid memo pages than the standard Weeks – the English edition includes 219 pages of graph paper in the appendix. If you use the planner as a journal, sketchbook or bullet journal extension, you'll have plenty of space for the entire year.
- Week view on the left, blank grid space on the right: The left page shows a horizontal weekly calendar with hourly grid. The right page is completely blank for notes, drawings, impressions or task lists – no pre-printed categories, no restrictions.
- Monthly overviews and yearly calendar: Monthly calendar pages at the beginning, plus a yearly overview spanning three consecutive years for forward planning.
- Bookbinding cloth cover: The fabric surface cover feels matte and slightly textured – grippy without sticking, durable for everyday use.
- Silver foil embossing "2027": The only decorative element on the cover; the midnight blue conveys understated elegance rather than graphic design.
- Includes sticky pocket: A transparent adhesive corner pocket is supplied with the planner and can be attached anywhere.
- Moon phases and daily quotes: Each weekly spread includes an English quote from the Hobonichi web magazine and the moon phase for each day.
Use & Tips
- Fountain pens: Tomoe River paper is the first choice for ink enthusiasts – shading and sheen are more pronounced on this paper than almost any other planner paper. Fine to medium nibs are recommended for the weekly calendar (limited space per line); on the blank grid pages, a stub nib works well too. Ink dries more slowly on Tomoe River than usual – wait briefly before turning the page.
- Gel and ballpoint pens: Glide very smoothly on the smooth surface. Fast-drying gel refills or oil-based ballpoint refills reduce smudging on the slow-absorbing surface. Non-archival inks may fade slightly over time.
- Washi tape and stickers: The thread-stitched binding and flat lay-flat design make two-page layouts easy. Thin washi tape rarely causes paper to wrinkle; exercise caution with moisture-based adhesives as Tomoe River is sensitive to dampness.
- Bullet journalling: The blank grid page on the right can be used as a daily log, habit tracker or index page; the 219 memo pages in the appendix provide capacity for collections and monthly reviews without a separate notebook.
- Combination with Weeks cover: The planner works without a cover but can be paired with separately available Weeks covers – for pen holders, pockets or a different exterior appearance.
- Cover care: The bookbinding cloth is sensitive to prolonged rubbing and moisture; avoid direct contact with wet clothing or other materials to minimise colour transfer.
For Planner Enthusiasts
The Tomoe River paper in the Hobonichi is a variant specially developed for Techo planners (often called "Tomoe River S") – thinner and smoother than standard paper, with exceptionally slow ink absorption. This very property creates the characteristic shading and sheen on water-based inks, effects that only appear on the paper surface as the ink dries. Those working with wet-writing nibs or chromatically rich inks will experience effects that simply don't occur on calendered or fast-absorbing papers. The thread-stitched binding is both a requirement for lay-flat functionality and a guarantee of long-term durability: unlike adhesive bindings, the book won't fall apart when opened daily over months. The Midnight Blue cover of the Colors series is solid colour with no printed pattern – making it the ideal canvas for sticker customisation without an existing design getting in the way.
