The Koh-I-Noor 5344 is a compact mechanical pencil made of black plastic – with a lead diameter of 5.6 mm and an overall length of approximately 10 cm. The tip, pusher, and push mechanism are made of metal: this gives the short pencil noticeable weight at the front end and precise, click-free lead. The format fits in any jacket pocket and yet rests safely in your hand.

Special Features

  • 5.6 mm lead system: The holder accommodates the widely used 5.6 mm format – compatible with graphite leads, charcoal leads, chalks, pastel leads, and colored leads of the same diameter. One holder, many media.
  • Short format (approx. 10 cm): The compact length makes the pencil especially handy for on-the-go use, for small sketchbooks, and for drawing techniques where the pencil is held flat and far back.
  • Black plastic housing: Lightweight and grippy, without slipping. The matte black is inconspicuous and holds up in your pocket without a protective case.
  • Metal push mechanism: Tip, pusher, and advance mechanism are made of metal – this gives the feed a solid, direct pressure point without play and protects the lead during transport.
  • Includes HB graphite lead: The package includes an HB graphite lead – ready to use immediately, no additional purchase needed.

Application & Tips

  • Sketching & Freehand Drawing: With 5.6 mm you can draw wide, organic strokes. On rough drawing paper or watercolor paper, differentiated hatching emerges – depending on the hardness grade of the lead, from soft-dark to precise-gray.
  • Charcoal and Chalk Leads: The 5344 is the ideal holder for brittle materials such as charcoal or pastel chalk in 5.6 mm: the lead sits protected in the housing and won't break during transport.
  • Lead Change: The pusher can be unlocked to remove the lead completely. This allows quick switching between hardness grades or lead types – such as from graphite to charcoal – without tools.
  • Short Grip: The compact 10 cm length invites you to hold the pencil near the tip or high up at a flat angle – particularly suitable for large-area shading or expressive sketching.
  • On the Go: The format fits without a case in a shirt breast pocket or the zipper compartment of a sketchbook. Together with a pad, you have your complete drawing tool kit with you.

For Drawing Enthusiasts

The 5.6 mm format has a long history in the artist and architect tradition: the thick lead enables line widths and surfaces that are hardly achievable with narrower lead pencils. By rotating the pencil while drawing, the lead wears down evenly all around and creates an increasingly wider contact surface – an effect that artists deliberately use to keep line character and shading variable. The Koh-I-Noor 5.6 mm leads are available in numerous hardness grades (from 8B to 4H) as well as in charcoal, chalk, colored, and metallic variants, so a single holder covers the entire spectrum of drawing media.
